Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina and head baseball coach
Bobby Moranda today unveiled the program's 22-game nonconference schedule that coincides with the previously announced 30-game Southern Conference slate to comprise the 2021 season.
WCU is to square-off against 10 different nonconference opponents representing seven different conferences with four-weekend series opening on Feb. 19 by hosting Towson, the first of three Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents, for four games at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium. The Catamounts also welcome Big East-member St. John's (March 12-14) for a weekend series while traveling in-state to both UNC Wilmington (Feb. 26-28) – the favorite to win the CAA's South Division – and Conference-USA member Charlotte (March 5-7).
Mountain-rival UNC Asheville visits Cullowhee on Feb. 23 in a one-off game, while the Catamounts have two additional one-game trips to former conference foes in both Davidson (March 3) and Elon (April 28), now in the Atlantic-10 and CAA, respectively. WCU has three home-and-home sets with ASUN-member Kennesaw State (March 10, H; March 17, A), SEC-foe Tennessee (March 30, A; April 13, H), and Gardner-Webb (April 7, A; May 4, H), a second foe from the Big South Conference.
The 10-week SoCon schedule opens March 19 as WCU visits divisional-foe Mercer in Macon, Ga., with the first home league two-day, three-game set slated for March 26-27 against The Citadel in Cullowhee. The schedule culminates with the 2021 SoCon Baseball Championship presented by Holston Gases at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., May 27-29 with the two divisional winners and top two remaining teams from the regular season standings seeded to comprise the four-team, double-elimination postseason conference tournament.
As WCU continues to track COVID-19 trends across the region, and in accordance with State Executive Orders and University policies, information relating to the availability of fans at baseball games this spring will be released in the coming days.
The 2021 Preseason All-Southern Conference team and preseason polls are anticipated to be announced on Thursday, Feb. 11 ahead of the start of the season on Feb. 19. Practice continues in Cullowhee as WCU eyes its season-opening home weekend series against Towson
