CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior
Matt Halvorsen set a new Western Carolina career record for made 3-pointers with 279 in a 74-63 loss at The Citadel in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon at McAlister Field House.
Halvorsen, a Kingsport, Tenn. native, entered the game one below Jake Robinson's career mark of 278. He tied the mark with a triple just under five minutes into the game and wrote his name in the record books with a 3-pointer at the 5:40 mark of the second half. Halvorsen accomplished the feat in 748 attempts.

Mason Faulkner led WCU (8-11, 1-9) with 18 points followed by
Cory Hightower with 17 points. Hightower grabbed eight rebounds, all on the defensive glass. Junior
Kameron Gibson had his best game of the season since returning from injury, contributing seven points off the bench and pulling down a career-best eight rebounds.
Hayden Brown had a double-double to lead The Citadel (10-7, 3-7), scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, 13 of which came on defense. Kaiden Rice (19), Tyler Moffe (14), and Derek Webster, Jr. (12) also finished in double figures.
The Bulldogs opened the game on a 10-3 run before a Gibson 3-pointer brought the Catamounts within one, 12-11, with 14:16 to play in the first half. WCU's deficit stayed between one and six points for the next 12 minutes before a Moffe 3-pointer gave the hosts a first-half-best 31-24 lead. Webster's layup with 32 seconds to play sent The Citadel into halftime with a 35-30 lead.
Hightower opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer but the Bulldogs answered WCU's early charge with an 8-2 run. After a
Tyler Harris jumper brought the Catamounts within five, 43-38, The Citadel went on a 10-0 run for a game-high 15 point lead, 53-38, with just under 14 minutes remaining. WCU battled back, pulling within four, 62-58, thanks to a Faulkner layup with 4:14 to play but would get no closer down the stretch.
The Citadel finished 27-for-61 (44.3 percent) from the field and 8-for-26 (30.8 percent) behind the 3-point line. WCU was 24-for-59 (40.7 percent) from the field and 4-for-22 (18.2 percent) in 3-point attempts. The Citadel outrebounded WCU 39-37.
WCU is back at home on Wednesday, hosting VMI at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with audio available on the Catamount Sports Network beginning at 6:30 p.m.
