Soccer Hits the Road to Samford and Chattanooga

First pair of SoCon road matches of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer travels to Samford Friday and Chattanooga Sunday in the Catamounts' Southern Conference road openers. WCU takes on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. (Eastern) Friday and the Mocs at 1 p.m. Sunday.

  AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Samford meet for the 15th time on Friday. The Bulldogs lead the series 11-2-1. Samford has won four of the last five meetings with the Catamounts winning one of the five 1-0 in Cullowhee on Oct. 25, 2015. 
  • Chattanooga and Western Carolina meet for the 22nd time on Sunday with the Catamounts leading the overall series 11-7-3. The Mocs, however, have won the last four meetings. WCU also won its last match against Chattanooga, as it did against Samford, in 2015. 
  • Western Carolina split its opening SoCon weekend defeating VMI 3-0 Friday before falling to UNCG 2-0 Sunday. 
  • The Catamounts earned its second shutout of the season with the 3-0 win over VMI. 
  • Sophomore Melody Mezzina earned her second shutout win against the Keydets. She has 24 saves on the season with a 0.79 goals-against average. Her 24 saves rank third in the SoCon and her 4.80 saves per game rank second in the conference. 
  • Seniors Regan Ward and Maryanne Kilgore each lead the Catamounts with two goals. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS:
  • Samford is coming off a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Chattanooga to open the Bulldogs' conference play. It was the second tie of the season for Samford as the club is still seeking its first win of the season. The Bulldogs have gone 242 minutes without scoring a goal. 
  • Chattanooga and Samford are in the same boat with a 0-0-1 record in Southern Conference play and 1-0-1 overall. The team will face ETSU on Friday before hosting the Catamounts on Sunday. The Mocs' only win on the season was a 2-0 decision over North Alabama. Mocs goalkeeper Ashton Shields is the reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week.
