CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer dominated ETSU on both ends of the field and powered past the Buccaneers 3-0 Friday afternoon at the Catamount Soccer Complex.

Turning Point:
Western Carolina broke open a scoreless game scoring its first goal of the game at the 22nd minute and went on to score two goals in the second half.

 Individual Leaders
  • Junior Amber Van Den Berg scored the first goal of the game and also added an assist in the Catamounts' second goal.
  • Sophomore Summit Dann and freshman Maggie Lloyd also scored goals for the Catamounts.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Melody Mezzina played the full 90 minutes in goal picking up her third win of the season. She also registered her third shutout.

Inside the Box Score
  • Van Den Berg looked to be offering up a corner kick midway through the first half. It was her second consecutive one in a minute, as the Catamounts' first corner kick in the sequence bounded out of bounds. She came back for the second corner on the right side of the ETSU goal and it was a perfect shot that curved just past the diving Bucs goalkeeper and into the top-right of the goal at 22:54.
  • In the second half, Western Carolina got its second goal of the game at the 55th minute. Van Den Berg was on the left side of the field and sent a pass to Dann who found herself less than a yard from the goal. In almost slow motion Dann faced off against ETSU goalie Ashton Blair and just tapped it past her for the goal.
  • The Catamounts capped off the game at the 88th minute when Rea Syska passed the ball to Lloyd who sailed it in for the score.
  • ETSU had just four shots in the match and Mezzina didn't have to truly field a ball by the Bucs until their lone shot on goal at 79:52 and the Catamount goalie handled it with ease.
  • The Catamounts had a total of 16 shots in the game as Bucs' goalie Ashton has four saves.
  • Western Carolina's defense was stifling 49 percent of the time WCU had it on its attacking side of the field.

 News & Notes
  • Western Carolina notched its third shutout of the season.
  • The three goals scored against ETSU ties for most goals in a match for the Catamounts.
  • Lloyd's goal against ETSU is her second of the season tying her with seniors Regan Ward and Maryanne Kilgore for most goals in the season.
  • Mezzina has a total of 28 saves on the season and a 0.99 goals-against average. For her career, Mezzina has 61 saves ranking her ninth in the WCU record books.
  • The Catamounts have now won two-straight against ETSU and three of the last four. It was the first Western Carolina win at home against the Buccaneers since a 3-2 victory in 2014.
