CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball hosts Appalachian State Tuesday, in a doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex, in the Catamounts 2021 home opener.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
- Western Carolina and Appalachian State meet for the 36th and 37th time in the two program's history on Tuesday. The Mountaineers lead the overall series 23 to 12. The two teams last met in 2019 in Cullowhee splitting the doubleheader. The Catamounts won game one 3-2 and dropped the second game 8-2. WCU knocked Appalachian State out of its final Southern Conference Championship in 2014 before the Mountaineers leaving the SoCon. With Appalachian State leading 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh, former Catamounts Taylor Sigmon hit a walk-off two-out two-RBI single for the Catamounts' 3-2 win to advance in the tournament. Overall, Western Carolina is 5-10 at home against Appalachian State.Â
- Western Carolina went 2-2 at the Mercer Bears Classic Mar. 13-14 getting wins against Presbyterian and Winthrop. When WCU faces Appalachian State Tuesday, the Catamounts will not have played for 10 days.Â
- Western Carolina has won three of its last five games after suffering through a nine-game losing streak near the start of the season.Â
- Junior Myra Twitty is on a seven-game hitting streak with multiple hits in three of those seven games. She has also hit eight of her 14 RBI in that seven-game span. She has a total of 14 RBI on the season ranking fifth in the SoCon.Â
- Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers leads the team with 51 strikeouts on the season which ranks second in the Southern Conference. For her career, Eilers has 74 strikeouts ranking 15th in the WCU record books. She needs six strikeouts to move into the 14th.Â
- As a program, Western Carolina is 9-6 in season home openers.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE MOUNTAINEERS:
- Appalachian State is on a five-game losing streak after getting swept by Texas State in its conference home-opening doubleheader. The Mountaineers lost three games at South Alabama to open Sun Belt play.Â
- The Mountaineers will be playing its third SoCon team when they meet Western Carolina on Tuesday. Appalachian State took two of three from UNCG in February and split with ETSU on Mar. 9.Â
- All 11 of Appalachian State's wins have come on the road.Â
- Appalachian State has three players batting above .300 led by Emma Jones' .397 who also leads with 25 hits. Baylee Morton leads the team with 19 RBI.Â
