Softball Opens SoCon Play at Chattanooga This Weekend

Doubleheader Saturday and single game Sunday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball opens Southern Conference play this weekend traveling to Chattanooga for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and a 1 p.m. single game Sunday all at Frost Stadium.
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Chattanooga meet for the 47th through 49th times this weekend. The Mocs hold a 39-7 record over the Catamounts. The Mocs have won the last eight meetings and eight of the last 10. The Catamounts are 4-21 in Cullowhee.
  • The Catamounts are coming off a pair of tough losses in its home opener against Appalachian State on Wednesday. WCU led for six innings in game one before falling 5-1 and lost game two 4-3 in 10 innings.
  • Junior Bailey Huneycutt leads the game with a .345 batting average and paces the team with 19 hits. She also tops the team with four home runs and third on the team with 10 RBI.
  • Kailey McNeil (.316) and Myra Twitty (.311) are the other two Catamounts hitting .300 or better. McNeil leads the team with 15 RBI and Twitty is just behind with 14.
  • Rookie Morgan Maddaluna returned to the Catamount lineup, in the doubleheader against Appalachian State, for the first time since Feb. 19 after an injury sidelined her for five weeks. 
  • Hurler Jayme Eilers has 57 strikeouts on the season, which leads the team and ranks second in the SoCon, and her 80 career strikeouts move her into 14th place in the WCU record books. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE MOCS:
  • Chattanooga is looking to snap its 11-game losing streak. The Mocs have not won a game defeating Tennessee Tech 6-5 Feb. 25 which has become a bookend as the two teams also met on Mar. 24 with the Golden Eagles coming out on top 7-0.
  • All four of the Mocs wins have come at home.
  • The Mocs has three players hitting above .300 led by Hayleigh Weissenbach's .326 batting average.
  • Pitcher Hannah Wood leads the Chattanooga pitching staff with a 3.74 ERA and 17 strikeouts.
