Soccer Closes Out Regular Season on the Road at Mercer and The Citadel

Catamounts still in the hunt for fourth seed in SoCon Championships

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer closes out the regular season traveling to Mercer on Thursday at 6 p.m. and The Citadel on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
 
The Catamounts still have a chance of vaulting to the No. 4 aeef and gain a coveted
spot in the SoCon Championship. There a multiple scenarios but WCU must first
control its own destiny winning the remaining two matches.

  AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Mercer meet for the 10th time on Thursday. The Bears hold a slight 5-4 advantage over the Catamounts. WCU dropped a tough 2-1 double-overtime decision in the first round of the 2019 SoCon Championships. The Catamounts have won three of the last five meetings including two of the last three and double overtime 1-0 victory in Macon in 2018. Overall, WCU is 3-3 at Mercer. 
  • The Catamounts and The Citadel met for the 20th time on Saturday. Western Carolina holds a commanding 17-1-1 lead over the Bulldogs and has won the last nine meetings. The Catamounts are 7-0 in Charleston, S.C. against The Citadel. 
  • Sophomore midfielder Rea Syska was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 30. She had a total of three assists in the Catamounts' pair of matches last week including two in the 3-1 win over Wofford on Mar. 29. It was the first time WCU had an Offensive Player of the Week since Shannon Fowkes in 2007.
  • Syska's six assists on the season lead the SoCon. 
  • Maggie Lloyd and Regan Ward lead the Catamounts with three goals a-piece which ranks tied for eighth in the SoCon.
  • Senior Natalie Icen got her second start of the season in the win over Wofford and picked up the win. She had four saves in the contest. For her career, Icen has 99 saves ranking eighth in the WCU record books. 
  • Western Carolina is led in goal by sophomore Melody Mezzina who has a record of 3-5 on the season, notched 35 saves, and has a 1.24 goals-against average in 723.35 minutes played. Her 1.24 goals-against average ranks eighth in the SoCon and her 35 saves is tied for fifth. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT OPPONENTS:
  • Mercer enters Thursday's match on a two-match losing streak falling to Samford and Chattanooga. The Bears have an overall record of 7-9-1 and are 4-3 in the SoCon. Mercer has scored 32 goals in 17 matches played and is allowing 1.24 goals per game. Ally Fordham leads the Bears with eight goals on the season. The Bears played six matches in the fall amassing a record of 1-4-1. 
  • The Citadel will tangle with ETSU before hosting Western Carolina on Saturday. The Bulldogs are 7-9-2 overall and 1-6 in SoCon play. The Citadel has lost its last three contests and four of its last five. Logan Dix leads the Bulldogs with 10 goals which lead the SoCon.
