Western Carolina looks for its first victory of the 2020-21 season after dropping three nonconference road games in the fall, including two against nationally-ranked FBS competition. WCU is winless in two league road games, falling at Furman and Samford to open the spring season.
The Catamounts are 34-12 all-time in home openers since moving into E.J. Whitmire Stadium back in 1974 after having its five-game home-opening win streak snapped in the 2019 season-opening loss to Mercer in Cullowhee. WCU has won 16 of its 20 home-opening games since 2000, including 11-straight from 1998-2008.
After its spring-opener vs. Chattanooga was postponed due to COVID protocols within the Mocs' program, VMI (1-0, 1-0 SoCon) opened the season with an upset of 10th-ranked Furman, 14-13, last weekend on post in Lexington. Though much of the preseason plaudits have been heaped upon a pass-heavy offense led by the SoCon's preseason Player of the Year QB Reece Udinski, it was the VMI defense that stood tall in the opener. The Keydets recorded 15 tackles for loss, including nine sacks on the Furman quarterback and recovered a game-sealing fumble inside the final minute of regulation with the Paladins driving. Linebacker Connor Riddle garnered both Stats Perform National and SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 13-tackle performance, including two sacks vs. Furman.
Udinski tallied the 19th 200-yard passing game of his career with 248 yards on 27-of-38 passing with two passing touchdowns in the opening win, VMI's first against an FCS-ranked team since 2002.
