Catamounts back in action Saturday hosting Presbyterian

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis earned its sixth win of the season with a 5-2 victory over North Carolina Central Sunday at the Dr. Younge Tennis Center. 
 
TURNING POINT:
Western Carolina took the doubles point and got wins at No. 1, 4, and 5 singles to secure the win. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco teamed up at No. 1 doubles, for the second time this season, defeating the Eagles' duo of Josefa Fernandez and Jade Houston 6-3 and a loss at No. 2 doubles tied doubles. The Eagles had to default at No. 3 doubles giving WCU the doubles point.  
  • Kata Foldeak put the Catamounts up 2-0 winning at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1. 
  • N.C. Central cut the WCU lead in half with a win at No. 2 singles but WCU went back up by two, 3-1 with Antonella Benavides 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. 
  • Western Carolina clinched the match when Hoda Habib won at No. 4 singles in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
  • Western Carolina won by default at No. 6 singles. 
 
NOTES:
  • Smith and Pezzuco are 2-0 as a tandem at No. 1 doubles. 
  • Smith improves to 25 wins in career doubles ranking fifth in the WCU record books. She needs six wins to move into fourth place. 
  • Western Carolina is now 7-4 against North Carolina Central.
  • The Catamounts have won three of its last five matches.  
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina returns home Saturday hosting Presbyterian at 2 p.m. at the Catamount Tennis Complex.
