Softball Travels to Presbyterian Wednesday for Doubleheader

First road games in 10 games

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball travels to Presbyterian Wednesday in a doubleheader with the Blue Hose set to begin at 2 p.m. The pair of games were originally set to be played on Mar. 3 but was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns in and around the Presbyterian program. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • The Catamounts and Blue Hose meet for the 20th and 21st time. The two teams met earlier in the season at the Mercer Bears Classic with WCU winning 7-2. Overall, Western Carolina leads the series 10-9 and is on a two-game win streak against Presbyterian. The Catamounts are 3-7 at Presbyterian with the last win a 4-3 victory in game two of a doubleheader in 2019.  
  • Western Carolina swept the Southern Conference weekly awards on Monday. Junior shortstop Bailey Huneycutt earned her second player of the week honor this season while Rice was named pitcher of the week, her first of the season and second in her career. 
  • The Catamounts are riding an 11-game winning streak snapping the previous school record of 10 consecutive set back in 2006. 
  • Western Carolina won all its games in its 10-game homestand as part of the 11-game win streak. 
  • In the last 11 games, Huneycutt is hitting .516 with 16 hits, 11 runs, three doubles, four home runs, and 10 RBI. She is one of six Catamounts hitting above .300 in that 11-game stretch. 
  • For the season, Huneycutt leads the SoCon with a .402 batting average and ranks second with eight home runs. 
  • In the circle, Rice has proved to be unflappable and durable in the last 11 games. She has won seven games with a 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched. She has allowed just nine runs and has struck out 27. 
  • Overall, Rice paces the pitching staff with nine wins, 100 innings pitched, and 20 appearances. She also has 61 strikeouts. 
  • Fellow hurler Jayme Eilers is just behind with eight wins in 96 innings pitched and paces the club with 79 strikeouts which ranks second in the SoCon. 
  • The Catamounts are 7-2 against Big South opponents this season.
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT BLUE HOSE:
  • Presbyterian begins a five-game homestand with the pair of games against the Catamounts Wednesday. 
  • The Blue Hose have allowed three runs or fewer to opponents in the last six games.
  • Presbyterian enters the week second in the Big South in team ERA at 2.65 and leads the conference in both opponents' batting average (.208) and strikeout rate (7.18/7). 
  • Rebecca Clark leads the Blue Hose at the plate with a .341 batting average with 15 hits, two home runs, and eight RBI.
