Softball Drops a Pair at Presbyterian

The Basics 
Score: Presbyterian 2, Western Carolina 1, Presbyterian 3, Western Carolina 0

CLINTON, S.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games at Presbyterian Wednesday dropping game one, 2-1, and falling in the nightcap 3-0 at the PC Softball Complex. 
 
Presbyterian 2, Western Carolina 1
 
Turning Point 
Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead but the Blue Hose scored two unanswered runs to secure the win. 
 
How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts took the lead 1-0 after Bailey Huneycutt drew a one-out walk and came around to score thanks to a Kailey McNeil single scoring on a Blue Hose error. 
  • Presbyterian tied the game with a run in the third and took the lead with a run in the fourth. 
 
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Savannah Rice tossed two scoreless innings before she was lifted in the third inning and replaced by Caitlin Griffin. 
  • Griffin takes the loss after giving up two runs, six hits, and suffering her first loss of the season, 0-1. 
  • Jayme Eilers replaced Griffin in the sixth inning with runners on base. She tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout. 
  • Western Carolina has five hits in the game and Presbyterian had seven. 
  • McNeil was 2-for-3 in the game.

Turning Point 
Presbyterian hit a pair of home runs in the bottom of the fifth to snap a scoreless tie and take the doubleheader. 
 
How it Happened 
  • The Blue Hose pitcher Haley Haselden had a no-hitter through four innings before Catamount Jeralyn Wells broke it up with a lead-off single in the fifth inning. 
  • Presbyterian hit two home runs in the bottom of the fifth. 
  • Western Carolina had strong scoring chances in the fifth and sixth inning with two runners on but in both instances, the runners were stranded.
  • The Blue Hose tacked on its third run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to its third home run of the game. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Eilers got the start tossing three scoreless innings and striking out five. 
  • Griffin replaced Eilers and gave up the two home runs in the fifth inning tossing two innings and taking the loss falling to 0-2 on the year.
  • Rice replaced Griffin in the sixth inning as she gave up the Blue Hose third home run of the game, allowed two hits, and struck out one.
  • Western Carolina had just one hit in the game – a single by Wells. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina snapped its program-record 11-game winning streak with the loss in game one at Presbyterian. 
  • The Catamounts were shut out in a game for the first time since the 8-0 loss at Chattanooga on Mar. 28. 
  • Huneycutt has reached base safely in the last 17 games and McNeil in the last 10. 
  • McNeil had her nine-game hit streak snapped in game two. 
  • Eilers now has 108 career strikeouts as a Catamount which ranks her 12th in the WCU record books. She becomes the 13th Catamount pitcher in program history to record over 100 career strikeouts. 
 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina travels to Mercer for a three-game conference series this weekend. The Catamounts and the Bears will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game also at 1 p.m.
