Softball Travels to USC Upstate Tuesday

First two mid-week games this week

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball travels to USC Upstate Tuesday for a mid-week doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m. at Cyrill Stadium. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and USC Upstate meet for the second time this season for the back-end of a home and home. The Catamounts swept the Spartans 4-3, 6-5(8) at home in Cullowhee on April 5. It was the first time in program history the Catamounts had taken a doubleheader against USC Upstate. Overall, the Spartans lead the series 22-3. The Catamounts are 1-12 at USC Upstate. The Catamounts have not won a game at USC Upstate in the 12 meetings in Spartanburg.
  • Front-running candidate for SoCon Player of the Year junior Bailey Huneycutt leads the team with a .392 batting average which also leads the Southern Conference. She also paces the conference in home runs with 10. She ranks second in the conference in hits (38) and runs scored (27).
  • Huneycutt's 10 home runs on the season ranks tied for ninth in the WCU record books for home runs in a season. She needs two to move into sixth place.
  • Huneycutt has turned 26 double plays in her career which ranks third in the WCU record books She needs two to move into second place usurping former Catamount Erica Hayes who ended her career with 27.
  • As a team, the 2021 squad has turned 13 double-plays this season which is tied for seventh in the Catamount record books. The team needs three double plays to move into fifth place.
  • Over the last three weeks, Western Carolina went 10-0 in its homestand and also broke the program record for most consecutive wins in a season with 11. The Catamounts had its streak snapped in a loss to Presbyterian on Feb. 14.
  • In the last 10 games, Western Carolina is 7-3, which includes the sweep of USC Upstate. In those last 10 games, Huneycutt has a .458 batting average with 11 his, eight runs scored, a double, four home runs, and eight RBI. In the pitching circle, in the last 10 games, hurler Savannah Rice is 4-0 with three complete games and a shutout. She has tossed 29.1 innings, allowing just nine runs and striking out 17. As a team, in the last 10 contests, the Catamounts are hitting .263 as a team with nine home runs. 
  • Western Carolina is 11-4 when leading after the second inning and only lost seven games when leading after the third and 12-9 after scoring first.
  • Junior Myra Twitty is on a three-game hitting streak.
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers has 119 career strikeouts which rank 11th in the WCU record books for most strikeouts in a career. For the season, she has 96 and needs four for the century mark which will make her the 13th Catamount pitcher in program history to have 100 or more strikeouts in a season. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT SPARTANS:
  • USC Upstate is coming off a doubleheader split with Winthrop winning the first game 6-4 and dropping game two 5-2.
  • The doubleheader with Western Carolina is the ninth and 10th time the Spartans will face off against a team in the Southern Conference this season. Overall, USC Upstate is 2-6 against the SoCon in 2021.
  • The Spartans have five players hitting above .300 this season paced by Sarah Price's .364 batting average.  
  • Spartan pitcher Mallie Brown leads USC Upstate with eight wins on the season and has 86 strikeouts.
