Final nonconference doubleheader of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball hosts North Carolina A&T Thursday in the Catamounts' final non-conference doubleheader of the season. The mid-week twin-bill begins at 2 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and North Carolina A&T meet for the 25th and 26th time on Thursday. The Catamounts are 19-5 all-time against the Aggies. WCU has won the last 11 meetings dating back to April 26, 2012. The Catamounts are 7-1 at home against N.C. A&T. Western Carolina saw a record-setting performance by former Catamount Taylor Sigmon in a game at N.C. A&T on April 13, 2016, when she tossed the first perfect game in Western Carolina softball program history. She sat down 21 straight Aggies and struck out 11. During the game, former Catamount Crystal Cyr hit an inside-the-park home run. Also during the pair of games against N.C. A&T that day, Sigmon broke the school record for RBI in a career.
  • At home, Western Carolina is hitting .293 and has hit 12 of its 29 home runs this season in the friendly confines of the Catamount Softball Complex. Individually at home, Bailey Huneycutt is hitting .476 with 20 hits, 11 runs scored, four doubles, five home runs, and 13 RBI.
  • Front-running candidate for SoCon Player of the Year junior Bailey Huneycutt leads the team with a .382 batting average which also leads the Southern Conference. She also paces the conference in home runs with 11. She ranks second in the conference in hits (42) and runs scored (28) and eighth in RBI (25).
  • In the last 10 games, in which WCU is 5-5, the Catamounts are 3-0 at home and 3-1 in conference play. Rookie Jeralyn Wells is pacing the team in the last 10 contests with a .333 batting average with nine hits, two runs scored, and four RBI. Opponents are trying to squelch the power-hitting of Bailey Huneycutt as she has been walked nine times in the last 10 games and has a .471 on-base percentage.
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers has 134 career strikeouts which rank tied for ninth in the WCU record books for most strikeouts in a career. For the season, she has 111 strikeouts making her the 13th Catamount pitcher in program history to have 100 or more strikeouts in a season ranking 10th in the WCU record books. Her 14 complete games this season rank tied for sixth in the WCU record books for most complete games in a season.

  • The Aggies are 3-7 over the last 10 games.
