CHARLESTON, S.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer battled a rested Citadel club, whose Thursday match was canceled when ETSU opted out of the rest of the season, to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Saturday in the mid-morning match at Washington Light Infantry Field.

The Catamounts were playing on less than 48-hours rest after a hard-fought match against Mercer two days before.

The match Saturday was the Catamounts' final contest of the unique spring season. Western Carolina was able to get its rookies key playing time as at times sometimes eight or nine freshmen were in the lineup in the 12 matches played this season.

HEAD COACH CHAD MILLER QUOTE:

"I am beyond proud at how hard our team battled in this match and the whole season. We are a very young team and I think they played with true heart and grit all season long."

How it Happened
  • Rea Syska's penalty kick goal at 48:24 in the second half, after a scoreless first half, gave Western Carolina a 1-0 lead. A foul was called on The Citadel after a Catamount player was tripped which led to a PK and Syska hit it to the right side past the Bulldog goalie.
  • Western Carolina looked to go up 2-0 just a few minutes later as it appeared Syska scored her second goal of the game but the goal was called back when a handball was called.
  • The Citadel tied up the match, 1-1, at the 79:54 mark.

 Individual Leaders:
  • Syska scored her first goal of the season.
  • Catamount goalkeeper Melody Mezzina ends the season with a record of 3-6-1 as she had four saves, allowing one goal, in the match against The Citadel.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina had 10 shots in the match with four in overtime.
  • Syska had a chance for the golden goal in the first overtime but her shot went wide left.
  • The Catamounts had two shots in the second overtime that was just a bit high.

News & Notes:
  • Syska, Maggie Lloyd, and Regan Ward each ended the season with eight points. Syska had six assists, and one goal, while Lloyd and Ward each had three goals and two assists.
  • Syska is tied for first in the SoCon with her six assists on the season.
  • Mezzina closes out the season with 40 saves and three shutouts on the season. She ranks ninth in the WCU record books with 73 saves in her Catamount career.
