Softball Hosts Furman in Key SoCon Series This Weekend

Seniors Danielle Chapman, Kailey McNeil and Addie Pate will be honored

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball closes out the home portion of its season this weekend hosting Furman in a key Southern Conference series. The two teams will volley for purple supremacy with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and closes out with a single game Sunday also at 1 p.m. Audio coverage will be available for all three games via CatamountSports.com.
 
Seniors Danielle Chapman, Kailey McNeil, and Addie Pate will be honored before the game on Sunday. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Furman meet for the 51st, 52nd, and 53rd times this weekend. The Paladins hold a 35-15 advantage over the Catamounts. Western Carolina has lost the last two games against Furman winning game one of the three-game series, 3-1, in 2019 in Cullowhee. WCU is 2-8 against Furman in the last 10 games and is 9-15 overall at home against the Paladins. 
  • The Catamounts currently lead the SoCon race with a record of 9-2. 
  • In conference-only games, junior Bailey Huneycutt is hitting a scorching .500 with 13 hits, 11 runs scored, three doubles, five home runs, has drawn 11 walks, and nine RBI. She also has an eye-popping 1.192 slugging percentage and a .649 slugging percentage. 
  • As a team, in conference-only games, the Catamounts are hitting .281 and holding conference teams to a .217 batting average. 
  • Huneycutt extended her on-base streak to 26 consecutive games, in the doubleheader against North Carolina A&T on Thursday, moving into third place in the WCU record books for most games reaching base.

  • Western Carolina is 14-2 at home this season and has won its last 12 home contests. The Catamounts are hitting .294 at home and Huneycutt is lighting it up at her home field with a .479 batting average hitting seven of her 13 home runs at the Catamount Softball Complex with 23 hits, 14 runs scored, and 18 RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers tossed the first no-hitter of her Catamount career, in-game one against N.C. A&T. She fanned 13 batters which rank fourth in the WCU record books for most strikeouts in a game. 
  • Eilers now has 124 strikeouts on the season moving her into ninth place in the WCU record books for most strikeouts in a season. For her career, she has 147 which rank her ninth in the WCU record books for strikeouts in a career. 
  • The Catamounts owned the month of April with a 14-5 record and a perfect 12-0 mark at home. The team batting average for the month is .274. Individually, Huneycutt is tearing up the month with a .423 batting average picking up 22 hits, scoring 15 runs adding five doubles and eight home runs along with 16 RBI. In the circle, Eilers is 6-2 for the month with a 1.52 ERA, making 12 appearances, starting nine games, tossed five complete games, had two shutouts, and struck out 59.
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE PALADINS:
  • Furman is coming off a doubleheader sweep at Presbyterian Wednesday winning 5-2, 2-0. 
  • The Paladins are currently in third place in the conference race with a record of 7-4. Furman split a doubleheader with Chattanooga last weekend. 
  • Mackense Greico leads the Paladins at the plate with a .357 batting average with 41 hits, eight home runs, and 33 RBI. 
  • As a team, the Paladins are hitting .245 and their opponents are hitting just a bit better than them with a .297. 
  • In the circle, the Paladins are paced by Sierra Tufts who is 8-10 with a 3.79 ERA. She has made 20 appearances, tossed 103.1 innings, and struck out 42.
