Softball Set to Host ETSU This Weekend

Catamounts conclude 10-game homestand

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball is set to host ETSU this weekend with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game Sunday also set for 1 p.m.

With the threat of inclement weather, this weekend, the days and times of the three-game series are subject to change. Please check catamountsports.com and the official Catamount athletics and softball Twitter pages (@catamounts @catamountSB) for all updates on the games. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and ETSU meet for the 33, 34th, and 35th times this weekend. The Buccaneers hold a 23-9 edge over the Catamounts and WCU has lost the last seven meetings. The three-game series in Cullowhee, in 2019, were all decided by two runs. Western Carolina is 5-9 at home against ETSU.
  • The Catamounts are riding an eight-game winning streak. 
  • In that eight-game winning streak, six Catamounts are hitting above .300 led by freshman Savannah Baldwin who has a .500 batting average with 10 hits, four runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run, and six RBI. 
  • Just under Baldwin is junior Bailey Huneycutt, who in the last eight games, is hitting .435 with 10 hits, seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, and six RBI. 
  • Western Carolina is currently tied for first place in the Southern Conference race with Chattanooga as both teams hold a 4-1 conference record heading into this weekend. 
  • The Catamounts rank second in the conference in team pitching with a staff ERA of 3.80. WCU trails only ETSU who has a team ERA of 2.64.
  • Huneycutt leads the team with a .367 batting average and her team-leading seven home runs are tied for second in the conference. She also tops the team in runs scored with 20 that ranks fifth in the conference. 
  • Senior Kailey McNeil is third on the team with a .313 batting average and paces the team with 22 RBI which is second in the conference. 
  • Catamount pitchers Jayme Eilers and Savannah Rice are top five in the conference for strikeouts. Eilers has 75 strikeouts on the season which ranks second in the conference. Rice has fanned 52 this season and sits fifth. 
  • In the Catamounts' eight-game winning streak Rice has won in her last three starts and came into a game to earn the win in two games. She also has a save. Also during the winning streak, Rice has struck out 18. 
  • Rice has proven she loves her home field. In nine home games this season she has a 1.58 ERA with a 5-1 record and a save. She has made eight appearances, started five, and tossed four complete games. She has tossed 35.1 innings and struck out 22. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT BUCCANEERS:
  • ETSU enters this weekend on a three-game losing streak after being swept by Chattanooga last weekend. Overall, the Buccaneers are 1-5 in conference play and have an overall record of 13-11. ETSU is 3-4 on the road.
  • ETSU is led at the plate by Lilly Holston who is batting .410 with a team-leading 25 hits while ranking second in RBIs with 16.
  • Kelly Schmidt paces the team in the circle with a 1.27 ERA in 13 appearances and 59 strikeouts.
