Records: Western Carolina 27-26, UNCG 34-15

GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 2 seed Western Carolina softball closed out the 2021 season as the SoCon Championship runner-up after dropping a gutsy battle with UNCG 9-4 Saturday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

It is the best finish in program history for the Catamounts and only the third time WCU has ended the season with a winning record ending the year 27-26.

Western Carolina had four players named to the SoCon All-Tournament team: sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers, junior first base Myra Twitty and seniors Kailey McNeil (catcher) and Addie Pate (outfielder).

Turning Point
UNCG used seven home runs to keep ahead of the Catamounts.

How it Happened
  • Western Carolina scratched the scoreboard first scoring a run in the top of the first. Lead-off hitter Claudia Riddle drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Riddle scored courtesy of an RBI single by Kailey McNeil.
  • UNCG tied the game in the bottom of the first on a fielder's choice RBI.
  • The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run and added a solo home run and a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.
  • Western Carolina began to claw back into the game with two runs in the top of the fourth. Myra Twitty got the fourth inning started with a solo home run. Jeralynn Wells followed with a double and after Lindsay Perillo's sacrifice bunt moved Wells to third she scored on a sacrifice fly RBI courtesy of Savannah Baldwin.
  • The Catamounts sliced the Spartans lead to one with a run in the fifth inning. Riddle drew her second walk of the game, stole second, and moved to third on a Bailey Huneycutt single. Kailey McNeil drew a walk to load the bases and Twitty picked up her second RBI of the game patiently earning a walk allowing Riddle to stroll home.
  • UNCG came back in the bottom of the fifth plating two runs – a solo home run and an RBI double.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, UNCG separated themselves even more with two more home runs.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Jayme Eilers got the start but was lifted in the third inning. She gave up three runs on five hits, had two walks and two strikeouts. She falls to 14-13 on the season.
  • Savannah Rice relieved Eilers in the third inning. She went the rest of the way giving up four runs on six hits and striking out two.
  • The Catamounts had eight hits in the game.
  • Baldwin was 2-for-2 in the game with an RBI.
  • Twitty was 1-for-2 with a run scored, a home run, and two RBI.

 News & Notes
  • Eilers ends the season with 196 strikeouts ranking seventh in the WCU record books.
  • Eilers becomes just the third Catamount pitcher in program history to have two wins in a conference tournament joining Mendy McKenzie (2007) and Jordan Garrett (2015).
  • Western Carolina's four players on the SoCon all-tournament team are the most in program history.
