CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina men's basketball head coach
Justin Gray today announced the addition of Vonterius Woolbright for the 2021-22 season. Woolbright, a 6-6 guard from Thomasville, Ga., joins the Catamounts after spending the previous two seasons at Lawson State Community College in Bessemer, Ala.
"A point/forward, I'm really excited about the things that Vonterius brings to both sides of the ball," said Gray. "He is a walking mismatch on offense and can be a terror on the ball."
During his sophomore season in 2020-21, Woolbright earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Honorable Mention All-America plaudits after he averaged a team-best 17.4 points per game – fourth in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) – with 8.6 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game over 23 games. He shot 48.4-percent from the floor and was named the ACCC Co-Player of the Year and took home first-team all-conference laurels.
Woolbright scored in double figures in all but one game with a season high of 29 points, and earned national NJCAA Player of the Week accolades for the week of Feb. 15-21 after averaging 20.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 11.5 assists in a pair of games against Sloan State.
As a freshman, Woolbright saw action in 27 games and averaged 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He posted nine double-figure scoring games with a season-best 24 points.
Woolbright prepped at Thomasville High School in Thomasville, Ga., where he helped lead the Bulldogs to the GSHA Class AA State Championship game as a junior, scoring with 17 points with seven assists in the title game.
