Catamounts back in action Sunday at Gardner-Webb

DURHAM, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer fell to No. 5 Duke 6-0 Thursday at Koskinen Stadium. 
 
 
How it Happened
  • Scoreless for the first 20 minutes, Duke found the back of the goal at 21:05 as Michelle Cooper scored on her eighth consecutive shot. 
  • Twelve minutes later, at 32:36, Cooper struck again with her second goal of the match.
  • The Blue Devils tacked on four goals in the second half. 
 
 Individual Leaders:
  • Duke's Cooper and Emmy Duerr each scored a pair of goals in the match. 
  • The Blue Devils Tess Boade and Julia Burnell dished out a pair of assists apiece. 
  • Catamount freshman Christian Layton and sophomore Rea Syska each had a shot in the match. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • The Catamounts got their first shot of the match a 36:17 as freshman Layton sent the ball to the top part of the crossbar and was swatted away by the Blue Devil goalkeeper. 
  • Duke took 30 shots in the match with 13 being shots on goal. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Ashlee Owens played the full 90 minutes picking up seven saves in the contest and falling to 1-2 on the season. 
 
News & Notes:
  • Owens tied her career-high with seven saves against the Blue Devils. She also had seven saves against North Florida. 
  • Duke earned its first shutout of the season while the Catamounts suffered their first scoreless match of the year. 
  • Western Carolina falls to 0-2 overall against Duke. 
  • The match against Duke is the third match Western Carolina has played in its home state. The Catamounts play their first seven contests in North Carolina before traveling to Martin, Tenn. to take on UT Martin on Sept. 12.
 
UPCOMING:
  • Western Carolina continues its road swing traveling to Boiling Springs, N.C. to tackle Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Sunday. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
