Destinee Dorsey was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 7-12, it was announced this afternoon. Dorsey, the SoCon's Libero of the Year and an all-conference performer last season, earns the weekly award for the first time this season and the fourth time in her career.
In three matches last week at the Colonel Classic, Dorsey recorded 58 digs for an average of 4.83 per set. In WCU's 3-2 win over Western Illinois, Dorsey tallied a match-best 28 digs. She also recorded two service aces and had three assists. The Mobile, Ala., native recorded a team-best 14 digs against New Mexico State and 16 digs against Eastern Kentucky.
Dorsey leads the Catamounts on the year with a 5.13 dig/set average.
The SoCon's weekly award winners are selected by the conference office from nominations submitted by sports information or media relations personnel at each member institution.
Western Carolina (3-5) wraps up the nonconference portion of its schedule this weekend, heading to Alabama to participate in the Bama Bash. The Catamounts face Houston (8-1) at 11 a.m. and Tennessee Tech (5-3) at 3 p.m. on Friday before closing out the tournament against the host Crimson Tide (5-3) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
