Soccer Travels to Furman and Wofford This Weekend

First road conference matches of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer travels to Furman on Friday and Wofford on Sunday in the Catamounts' first road Southern Conference matches of the season.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Transfer Valentine Pursey leads the Catamounts with three goals on the season scoring her third goal of the team in the 1-0 win over The Citadel Sept. 26. All three of Pursey's goals, on the year, have been game-winners.
  • Junior Melody in the Catamounts 1-0 win over The Citadel on Sunday. She leads the SoCon in shutouts and shutouts per game, second in the conference in goals against average (0.51) and fourth in saves percentage (.871). In her eight matches played this season she has only given up four goals.
  • In the last three games, rookie Naya Marcil has scored two goals and added an assist.
  • Western Carolina is 3-2 over the last five matches.
  • The Catamounts are 3-1 on the road and have won their last three road contests.
  • Five of Western Carolina's six wins this season have been via shutout.

  • Western Carolina and Furman meet for the 29th time on Friday. The Paladins hold a 20-7-1 advantage over the Catamounts and have won the last three meetings. The Catamounts are 3-8 in Greenville, S.C. with the last victory at Furman (2-0) coming on Oct. 23, 2009.
  • The Catamounts and Wofford meet for the 26th time on Sunday. WCU is 15-7-3 all-time against the Terriers. WCU has won the last six meetings and are 4-3-3 in Spartanburg, S.C.
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE OPPONENT:
  • Furman is coming off a conference-opening 3-2 loss to Wofford. The Paladins are 3-2-1 at home on the year. Kyndal Anderson leads Furman with four goals this season as the Paladins have scored 16 goals on the year and given up eight.
  • Wofford faces ETSU before taking on Western Carolina on Sunday. The Terriers got the early leg up in conference play defeating Furman 3-2 halting a four-match losing streak. The Terriers Rachel Raisins was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week after tallying five points with two goals and one assist in the win.
