Women's Tennis Opens 2022 Season Wednesday

Hosts Lenoir-Rhyne

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis opens the 2022 season at home at 2 p.m. Wednesday hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at the Catamount Tennis Complex.

This will be the 12^th meeting between the Catamounts and Bears with WCU holding a 9-2 advantage. Western Carolina has won the last five meetings and is 5-0 at home against Lenoir-Rhyne. The two clubs last met on Jan. 29, 2021 with the Catamounts winning 6-1 in the dual match.

Western Carolina returns six players from the 2021 season including Southern Conference First Team All-Conference selection, Kata Foldeak. The sophomore from Budapest, Hungary was also a SoCon All-Freshman honoree.

WCU has four seniors on the squad which includes the SoCon First Team All-Conference at No. 1 doubles Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco. Redshirt senior Jordyn King and senior Hoda Habib are also a pair of Catamount veterans anchoring the team.

Foldeak's fellow freshman Antonella Benavides led the team in 2021 with 11 victories in singles play. Her 11 wins in singles ranks tied for 11th in the WCU record books for most singles wins in a season.

Western Carolina also welcomes freshmen Miray Konar, Luzia Obermeier, and Angela Perez. Obermeier joined the squad for the 2022 spring semester.
