GREENVILLE, S.C. – Junior
Vonterius Woolbright scored a team-best 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, but Western Carolina was held to a season low offensively in an 88-50 loss to Furman inside Timmons Arena on Wednesday.
Furman improves to 13-7 overall and 5-2 in the Southern Conference while WCU drops to 8-11 and 2-4.
Woolbright finished in double figures for the 10
th time this season and was WCU's leading scorer for the third time. He also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Marvin Price tallied 11 points off the bench.
Mike Bothwell led three Furman players in double figures with 26 points. JP Pegus tallied 18 points and was joined in double figures by Conley Garrison with 12 points. Jalen Slawson pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. The Paladins made 21 3-pointers in the home win, one shy of their season-best drained in the season opener.
A 3-pointer by Garrison opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game, but both teams ultimately got off to slow starts as Furman led just 5-2 through the first five minutes of the game. Following a pair of Bothwell free throws that put the hosts ahead 7-2, WCU went on a 6-0 spurt as a Price 3-pointer gave WCU its first lead of the game, 8-7, with 13 minutes to play before the break. The Paladins responded with a 24-to-2 run, claiming a 31-10 lead after a JP Pegues 3-pointer at the 3:25 mark. Furman led 33-16 at half as a
Joe Petrakis free throw capped scoring in the opening stanza.
Just as in the first half, a Garrison 3-pointer opened the second half scoring. Furman, which shot 58-percent from beyond the arc in the second half, led by as many as 44 and no fewer than 19 points after intermission in improving to 9-1 at home in Timmons Arena this season.
The Paladins converted 15 Catamount turnovers into 26 points and held a 42-31 edge in rebounds. Furman went 29-for-64 (45.3 percent) from the field, 21-for-44 (47.7 percent) behind the arc, and 9-for-10 (90 percent) at the free throw line. WCU was 18-for-53 (34 percent) from the field, 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) behind the arc, and 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) at the free throw line.
WCU continues its three-game road swing on Saturday, heading to Mercer for a 5 p.m. tip-off. The contest between the Catamounts and Bears will be streamed on ESPN+ (
