WCU is 6-7 overall on the year following a 98-82 setback at Charlotte on Dec. 22. Freshman Marcus Banks came off the bench and led the Catamounts with a career-high 22 points against the 49ers. Banks tallied 17 points in the first half as he made all six of his field goal attempts including five 3-pointers. Graduate student Nicholas Robinson finished in double figures for the team-best 11th time this season with 19 points while junior Vonterius Woolbright tied a career-high with 17 points. WCU saw scheduled games against both UNCG on Dec. 29 and at ETSU on Jan. 1 postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Citadel is 6-5 on the season after losses to South Carolina State and Manhattan in the Cobb Dill & Hammet Classic hosted by the Bulldogs in Charleston on Dec. 20 and 21. Graduate student Hayden Brown leads the Bulldogs and is tied for first in the league with an average of 20.1 points per game. The Citadel brings the top scoring offense in the SoCon to Cullowhee and is 21st nationally, scoring an average of 81.9 points per game. The Bulldogs lead the SoCon in blocked shots with 3.8 and assists with 19.4. Much like WCU, The Citadel had its first two league games against Mercer and Samford postponed.

Wednesday's game is the 83rd all-time meeting between the schools with WCU holding a 44-38 advantage. The teams split the regular season matchups last season with the Catamounts earning a thrilling 76-75 win in Cullowhee on Feb. 1 before the Bulldogs protected their home court five days later with a 74-63 victory. The Citadel eliminated WCU from the 2021 Ingles Southern Conference Tournament with a 100-86 win in the first round in Asheville.

The Catamounts are scheduled to hit the road on Saturday (Jan. 8), venturing to Samford for a 3 p.m. Eastern/2 p.m. Central tip-off. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required).
