Catamounts Face Furman in Bon Secours Wellness Center Saturday

Completes two-game conference road swing

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball completes its two-game Southern Conference road swing at Furman Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Bon Secours Wellness Center.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Furman meet for the 88th time on Saturday. The Paladins hold a 48-39 lead over the Catamounts all time. Western Carolina has lost the last eight meetings to the Paladins and is 1-9 against Furman in the last 10 games. WCU's last win came on Feb. 2, 2017, in Cullowhee, with the Catamounts knocking off the Paladins 74-72 in overtime. WCU's last road win at Furman was on Jan. 23, 2013, with an 88-83 victory. The two teams will play in a neutral setting Saturday. WCU won the last neutral setting meeting against Furman 75-70, in Asheville, on Mar. 8, 2014.
  • Sophomore Joi Reid had a career-high four blocks against Wofford on Thursday. The mark ties her for ninth in the WCU record books for blocks in a game. It is the most blocks in a game, for a Catamount, since Nov. 12, 2017, when Sherae Bonner had four against UNC Asheville.
  • Sophomore Zanoria Cruz has scored in double figures in three consecutive games and four of the last five games. She has led the team in scoring in the last three games including a season-high 18 points in the win over Montreat.
  • In the last five games, Cruz is averaging 12.6 points per game, over three points better than her seasonal average of 9.3. In those five games, she is shooting 43.5 percent from the field and hit seven of her total 12 three-pointers for the season.
  • As a team, the Catamounts lead the SoCon in rebound margin outrebounding opponents by a margin of 8.3 per game. The mark also ranks 35th in the NCAA. The Catamounts 566 rebounds this season is second in the SoCon and 40th in the NCAA
 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT FURMAN:
  • Saturday's contest will mark Furman's first appearance on the court since Dec. 29 when the Paladins knocked off South Carolina State, 47-32, in Orangeburg.  
  • Fifth year senior Tierra Hodges was named SoCon Player of the Month for December. She leads the SoCon in rebounding (11.5 rpg) and ranks second in both scoring (15.8 ppg) and free throw percentage (.868)
  • Furman is 2-3 over the last five games.
  • Away from Timmons Arena Furman is 3-6 (2-6 away and 1-0 in a neutral setting).
