Catamounts Advance in Day One of ITA Carolina Regional

Ipunesso and Madison Schwarz make to round of 16 in singles play

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis closed out day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Regionals, hosted by Wake Forest, Thursday.
 
WOMEN'S OPEN SINGLES:
Main Draw:
Fresh off her singles championship at the NCCU Invite last weekend freshman Leilany Ipunesso picked up a pair victories in the first two rounds to move to the round of 16. She defeated Gardner-Webb's Elise Semmartin 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 64 and came back later in the day to take the matco over Davidson's Emma Heiderscheit 6-7 (5-7), 6-0 when the Wildcat player had to retire before the third set. Ipunesso will face Lucia Aranda from Charlotte on Friday.
 
Madison Schwarz also earned a spot in the round of 16. She opened the day defeating Gardner-Webb's Email Roslund 7-5, 6-0 and Elon's Julie Ball 6-4, 6-1. She will go up against College of Charleston's Halli Tinkle Friday.
 
Jade Groen and Angela Perez both lost in the round of 64. Groen went to three sets before falling 7-5, 1-6, 3-6 to Appalachian State's Virginia Poggi. Perez fell in straight sets 5-7, 3-6 to Furman's Sara Snyder.
 
CONSOLATION:
Groen and Perez bounced back in the consolation bracket winning their first-round match. Groen defeated Wofford's Georgia Fischer 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), while Perez took down UNCG's Raegan Mitchell 7-5, 6-4 (4-6). Both move on to the round of 32.
 
A1 DOUBLES:
Andrea Redondo Gutierrez and Chloe Schwarz picked up a victory in the round of 32 defeating when the duo from Elon withdrew due to injury. They will play a doubles team from South Carolina in the round of 16.
 
B DOUBLES:
Groen and doubles partner Dasha Osadova defeated the team from UNC Wilmington 8-4. They will play in the round of 16 against a team from Wofford who had a bye in the first round.
 
A 2 DOUBLES:
Ipunesso and Perez teamed up to defeat a team from Appalachian State 8-3 and will move on to face a pair from South Carolina.
 
Madison Schwarz and Isabella Sambola also advanced with a win over a pair from North Carolina, 8-6. They move on to face another due from the ACC in a tandem from Duke.
 
Western Carolina continues to play in the ITA Carolina Regional Friday.
