Catamounts Fall in SoCon Quarterfinals to UNCG

The Basics:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Maggie Lloyd scored a goal in the 76th minute, cutting the No. 4 seed UNCG lead in half, but No. 5 seed Western Carolina could not push in a match-tying goal in the Southern Conference quarterfinals. The Catamounts fall 2-1 to the Spartans Friday at the Chattanooga Sports Complex.
 
Turning Point:
  • UNCG scored in the first 20 minutes of the match and scored what would be the match-winning goal, four minutes into the second half.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Spartans Caroline Wood took a shot from the left side of the net and found the back of the right side of the net at 19:54.
  • Four minutes into the second half the Spartans added a second goal.
  • Western Carolina has a beauty of a scoring chance 14 minutes into the match, but Maggie Lloyd's attempt was saved by the Spartan goalie's fingertips.  
  • Lloyd would find the back of the net in the 76th minute sending the ball high into the left side of the goal for the score.
  • The Catamounts outshot the Spartans 13 to six. Eight of Western Carolina's shots were in the second half.
 
News & Notes:
  • UNCG avenged its 2021 Southern Conference quarterfinal loss to Western Carolina as the Spartans fell 1-0 in overtime. 
  • Lloyd ends the season with a career-high five assists and four goals to lead the team with 13 points.
  • First Team All-Conference and All-Freshman selection Isabella DeMarco closed out the season tied with Lloyd with four goals. 
  • Isabella DeMarco and her older sister Alexis both started the match against UNCG. 
  • The Catamounts lost by one goal four times this season.
  • Head Coach Chad Miller eclipsed 100 wins as the Catamounts head soccer coach ending the season with 103. For her career, he is sitting at 197 and will look to hit 200 in the 2023 season.
