Catamount Soccer Hosts UNCG and VMI

Two of final three home matches of the 2022 season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer returns home this weekend to host a pair of Southern Conference matches, welcoming UNCG to the Catamount Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and the VMI Keydets Sunday at 2 p.m.
 
Head coach Chad Miller will be honored prior to Friday's match after reaching his 100th career victory at the helm of the Catamount program.
 
Friday night's match has also been deemed  a "purple out," raising domestic violence awareness. The Center for Domestic Peace will have a table and be passing out materials. WCU's Title IX office will also have a table on the concourse at the match.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina is looking to halt a two-match losing streak.
  • The Catamounts are 1-4 over the last five contests.
  • Senior Riley Terry scored the first goal of her Catamount career in the 2-1 loss at Mercer.
  • Sophie Burchfield and Maggie Lloyd each lead the Catamounts with two goals each.
  • Junior Alexis DeMarco has dished out a career-best three assists on the season.
  • The Catamounts have tied a match four times on the year just one shy of the program record five set in 2005.
  • As a team, the Catamounts have given up 17 goals on the season. Offensively WCU has scored seven goals on the year which does not include the own goal scored in the 1-1 tie at Mount St. Mary's.
  • The Catamounts face a UNCG team, Friday, that is also on a two-match losing streak.
  • Western Carolina and the UNCG Spartans meet for the 32nd time Friday. The Spartans hold a 24-4-3 record over the Catamounts. WCU halted a 10-match losing streak to UNCG in 2021 defeating the Spartans 1-0 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championship.
  • The Catamounts are 1-11 against UNCG at home. The lone Western Carolina home victory over the Spartans was on Oct. 12, 2001 knocking off UNCG 2-1.
  • Western Carolina will host VMI Sunday after the Keydets match at ETSU Friday.
  • WCU is 9-0 against VMI all time. The Catamounts have not allowed the Keydets to score a goal in the nine meetings scoring a total of 17 goals in the combined contests.  
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS:
  • Just like Western Carolina, UNCG is 1-2 in SoCon play.
  • The Spartans have shutout three opponents on the year including a 3-0 conference victory over VMI.
  • UNCG has scored 15 goals on the year and given up 20.
  • Maddy Gilhool leads the Spartans with five goals and one assist.
  • Abby Buchholz has played all 12 in goal for UNCG. She has allowed 13 goals.
  • VMI has lost its last two matches and searching for its first SoCon victory currently sitting at 0-3.
  • The Keydets have been shutout six times on the year including in the last two matches against Chattanooga and Samford.
  • Western Carolina and VMI have a common nonconference opponent in Ohio. The Keydets lost to the Bobcats 11-0.
  • Sedona Dacu paces VMI with five goals.
  • VMI has given up 40 goals on the year and scored nine.
