Postgame Notes
Western Carolina 36, Wofford 29
Bob Waters Field at E.J. Whitmire Stadium
Cullowhee, N.C. | Saturday, No. 5, 2022
Att: 10, 107

With the Win…
  • Western Carolina halts a three-game seasonal losing skid following road setbacks against both Mercer and Furman and a home loss to The Citadel;
  • Ended a five-game losing skid on Homecoming Day for the Catamounts, marking the first victory on Homecoming since 2015;
  • Represents a second-straight series victory over the Terriers, marking the first back-to-back series victories the 2014-15 season;
  • Gave WCU a third home victory this season at Whitmire Stadium, the most since winning three of its five home dates in the 2017 season;
  • Was the fourth seasonal win for the Catamounts in 2022, matching the total number of victories for Kerwin Bell's first season in Cullowhee in 2021 (4-7).

Post-Game Notes
  • Western Carolina scored its first come-from-behind victory of the season, rallying from a nine-point 21-12 deficit early in the third quarter to tie the game at 26 before again overcoming a three-point, 29-26, fourth-quarter deficit in the win;
  • Western Carolina scored its first win of the season (1-4) -- and the first win all-time under Kerwin Bell (1-10) when trailing after the first quarter ... the win was also the first victory under Bell when trailing at halftime (1-10);
  • SoCon Freshman of the Year candidate, RB Desmond Reid posted his second-straight 100-yard rushing performance with 112 yards against Wofford … He had 129 yards against The Citadel on Oct. 22 … Overall, it's Reid's third 100 yard plus rushing performance of the season … He had career-best 175 yards in the win over Presbyterian earlier in the year;
  • Reid added 45 receiving yards to pace the Catamount offense with 157 total yards in the winning effort;
  • Reid has rushed for a team-best 694 yards in eight of the team's nine games this season … His current stats rank him second in WCU's freshman record book for rushing yards by a true freshman, second only to Darrell Lipford's 983 rushing yards in 1974 … Reid is averaging 7.2 yards per carry (694 yards on 96 carries), the most by a WCU freshman back all-time;
  • Junior transfer RB Jalynn Williams scored career-best two rushing touchdowns against Wofford including the game-winning score … Williams carried eight times for 37 yards and also had three receptions for 32 yards, finishing with 69 total yards and the two scores;
  • Junior QB Carlos Davis returned to the lineup Saturday after missing the game against The Citadel Oct. 22 due to injury … Davis was 16-of-24 passing for 268 yards and two touchdowns and was intercepted once … He also rushed for 78 yards, the second-most yards on the ground in a single-game in his career … It is the fifth time this season he has had multiple touchdown passes in a game;
  • Davis tossed scoring strikes to freshman WR Censere Lee (8-yards) and redshirt sophomore WR Raphael Williams (73-yards) … With receiving scores in the win, both Lee and Williams matched David White Jr., with a team-best five receiving touchdowns on the season … Also, the 73-yard TD reception by Williams represented a career-long catch;
  • Western Carolina amassed 515 yards of total offense in the game against Wofford – the fifth time the Catamounts have eclipsed 500 yards or more total offense in a game this season, keeping the seasonal average above 505 yards of total offense per game this year, still the third-best average in the NCAA FCS;
  • Redshirt junior Richard McCollum's three field goals in the game against Wofford is the second most for the Sanford, N.C. native this season … It was one shy of his seasonal-high of four against Samford earlier this year … For his career, McCollum is now 31-of-37 in his career with his 31 field goals ranking him fourth in school history, by-passing former All-American Josh Jones (28-of-35, 1999-2000) … With 193 career points scored, McCollum now ranks sixth in program history, leaping over former kicker Ken Hinsley (189 points, 1995-98);
  • Freshman AJ Columbo had a career-long 35-yard kick return against Wofford;
  • WCU's defense recorded one sack against Wofford giving the Catamounts two sacks over the past four games … the Catamounts slipped to second in the SoCon with 26 seasonal sacks on the year … WCU was credited with six quarterback hurries in getting pressure on Wofford QB Jimmy Weirick;
  • Senior DB Taurus Dotson Jr., accounted for a career-high two tackles for loss as the Catamounts finished with four on the day … In his first action of the season, sophomore DE Caleb Fisher helped combine on a TFL with Cameron McCutcheon, with Micah Nelson posting a sack for the fourth TFL in the win;
  • The Catamount defense limited the new-look Wofford offense to just 80 rushing yards in Saturday's win, the second-fewest by an opponent this season (VMI only rushed for 76 yards) … It was the fourth opponent the Catamounts had held to 100-or-fewer yards – and fifth if you count the 101 yards Samford rushed for, just eclipsing the century mark back on Sept. 24.

Miscellaneous Notes:
  • WCU's captains for Saturday's game were senior RB #0 TJ Jones … senior DB #1 Cameron McCutcheon … senior DE #6 KJ Milner and fifth-year senior OL #67 Dalton Tomlison … sophomore DB #21 Andreas Keaton carried the USA flag during the pregame team run-out;
