Catamounts Host Winthrop Thursday

Concludes two-game home streak

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball closes out its two-game home stand Thursday hosting Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • After Thursday's home game against Winthrop, Western Carolina will play its next five games on the road. WCU will not return home until Dec. 1 when the team will host Queens at Noon for its annual Education Day game.
  • Graduate student Kyla Allison returned to the hardwood after 613 days, due to an injury that had her sit out the 2021-22 season and led the team with 13 points in the season-opening win over Bluefield State. She also had six rebounds, dished out five assists, and had two steals. Allison scored in double figures for the 16th time in her career.
  • Not one but two freshmen scored in double figures against Bluefield State. Kehinde Obasuyi scored 10 pts. in the first half and Reagan Trumm ended the game with 11. According to available records, they are the first pair of freshmen to score double figures in their opening game in program history.
  • Western Carolina is looking to open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season when the Catamounts defeated Brevard and Anderson to open the year.
  • Western Carolina and Winthrop meet for the 45th time on Thursday. The Catamounts hold a 31-13 advantage over the Eagles however, Winthrop has won the last two meetings. Winthrop won 71-55 in Rock Hill, S.C. in 2021 and defeated the Catamounts 63-60 in Cullowhee in 2019. WCU is 19-10 at home against the Eagles and is 6-4 over the last 10 meetings. Western Carolina has never lost three straight to Winthrop in the 44 meetings.
 
 AN INSIDE LOOK AT WINTHROP:
  • Winthrop opened the 2022-23 season with a 72-32 loss at Central Florida.
  • Paige Powell led the Eagle with nine points against the Knights.
  • The Eagles begin their season with a brand-new roster in head coach Semeka Randall Lay's third season as the permanent head coach. The team has two graduate students, two seniors, one junior, six sophomores and two freshmen, with five players being transfers.
  • Winthrop's matchup with Western Carolina is the first of two Southern Conference teams the Eagles will face this season. Winthrop will host UNCG Nov. 27.
  • Winthrop was voted to finish 9th in the Big South Conference preseason poll.
