Catamounts Host UAB Saturday in Doubleheader

Second of three-game home stand

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball hosts UAB at 2 p.m. Saturday on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center as part of a doubleheader with Catamount men's basketball who hosts USC Upstate at 5:30 p.m.

Once again, this season, WCU Athletics will implement a clear bag policy for all home men's and women's basketball games in the Ramsey Center. Only standard clear bags, 12-inches by 6-inches by 12-inches in size, small purses approximately 4.5-inches by 5-inches not including the strap, and clear gallon-size storage bags are permitted. Diaper bags (child must be present upon entry) and any medical-related bags will be allowed.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina halted a two-game losing streak with a 68-59 home win over Queens. The Catamounts are currently 3-0 at home this season.
  • The Catamounts scored a season-high 68 points in the win over Queens Thursday.
  • The Catamounts connected on a season-best 20 free throws in the win over Queens.
  • Junior Audrey Meyers is having a strong first half of the season. She recorded a career-best nine rebounds against Queens and has a total of 39 boards on the year. She is just 16 rebounds away from tying her career-best mark of 57 she set in her sophomore year.
  • Kyla Allison leads the team from the free throw line hitting 16 of 17. Her 94.1 free throw percentage ranks third in the Southern Conference.
  • Western Carolina ranks third in the SoCon in scoring defense allowing 62.6 points per game.  The Catamounts are averaging 13 offensive rebounds a game which also ranks third in the SoCon.
  • Western Carolina and UAB meet for just the second time on Saturday. The two teams last met 25 years ago on Dec. 20, 1997, in Birmingham, Ala. with the Blazers taking the win 66-58. April Fleck led the Catamounts in the loss to the Blazers with 24 points. The meeting with UAB is the first time the Catamounts have faced a team from Conference USA since the 2014-15 season. On Dec. 20, 2014, the Catamounts knocked off C-USA member Florida International 83-69 in the second round of the Oceanfront Holiday Tournament hosted by North Florida.
 AN INSIDE LOOK AT UAB:
  • UAB (4-1) is coming off a second-place finish at the Goombay Splash in Bimini Bahamas. The Blazers defeated George Mason before falling to #12/13 LSU in the championship game.
  • UAB and WCU have one common opponents this season - LSU.
  • Denim DeShields leads UAB averaging 13.8 points per game.
  • The Blazers are giving up 69.4 points per game to opponents.
