Eilers Tosses One Hit Shutout as Catamounts Down N.C. State 1-0

Catamounts went 4-1 in tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jayme Eilers tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out 11 in Western Carolina softball's 1-0 shutout of N.C. State Sunday in the final day of the River City Lead-Off at the UNF Softball Complex on the North Florida campus. 
 
Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored the lone run in the game in the top of the first and N.C. State had only three baserunners in the contest.
 
How it Happened 
  • Brooklynn Brewington reached first on a Wolfpack error to lead off the first inning. Jeralynn Wells followed with a single and moved to second on N.C. State's second error of the inning and Brewington motored to third. Bailey Huneycutt picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice which allowed Brewington to score. 
  • N.C. State was sat down in order in five of the seven innings. 
  • Eilers struck out the side in two of the seven innings. 
  • In the sixth, Western Carolina had a chance to add to its run total when Brewington singled for the Catamounts second hit of the game. Huneycutt followed with a walk, but they were stranded at third and second.
  • Eilers tossed a near-masterpiece as she had a no-hitter going through 6.2 innings before the Wolfpack's Taylor Johnson broke it up with a two-out single. N.C. State's chance at a comeback was squelched with a flyout to centerfield. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
 
  • Eilers threw a complete game allowing one hit, tying her season-high with 11 strikeouts and walking two. She improves to 3-0 on the season. 
  • Wells and Brewington each had a hit in the game. 
  • Brewington and Huneycutt each had a stolen base.
  • N.C. State committed three errors in the game.  
 
News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina opens the season 4-1 for the first time since 2016. 
  • Eilers ends the weekend with a 3-0 record in the circle with 23 strikeouts, two complete games, one shutout, and a 0.83 ERA. 
  • Brewington was 4-for-4 in stolen bases in the five games at the tournament. 
  • Western Carolina shut out an opponent twice in the tournament. 
  • Before the game today, N.C. State had outscored opponents 23-11. The Wolfpacks were held scoreless for the first time this season.
