Catamounts Host Georgia State in Home Opener

Earliest Home Opener in program history

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball hosts Georgia State Wednesday in its home opener. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. 
 
Feb. 16 is the earliest date for a home game for the Catamounts in program history.

 Georgia State
 
  • Western Carolina and Georgia State meet for the 17th and 18th time Wednesday
  • The Catamounts swept the last meeting, on Mar. 1, 2019, taking the doubleheader in Atlanta, Ga. 5-4, 6-3, and have won three of the last five meetings. 
  • These will be the fifth and sixth meetings in Cullowhee between the two teams. 
 
NOTES
 
  • Junior pitcher Jayme Eilers was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week. She went 3-0 with 23 strikeouts against just two walks, five hits allowed, and a 0.82 ERA in three appearances at the River City Leadoff in Jacksonville, Florida. She also helped direct the Catamounts to a 1-0 win over N.C. State. 
  • Eilers was named as one of the top performances by the NFCA (National Fast Pitches Coaches Association). The second-straight year she has earned that distinction. 
  • Sophomore Riley Lambert enters Wednesday leading the Catamounts with a .400 batting average. She ended the first weekend with four hits, a double, a run scored, and an RBI. 
  • Junior Brooklynn Brewington leads the team on the basepath with four stolen bases. She had three stolen bases, tying the program record, in the game against Winthrop on Feb. 11. 
  • Junior Savannah Rice opened the season with strong performances on the pitching circle and at the plate. In the circle, she has a 1-0 record and a 1.08 ERA with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, she is hitting .222 with two hits, both home runs, four runs scored, and two RBI. Here second home run of the River City Lead-Off tied the game against Jacksonville on Feb. 12 in the seventh inning and helped lead WCU to a 4-3 win over the Dolphins in nine innings. 
  • Eilers has seven shutouts in her career which ranks third in the WCU record books. The record is 11 and former Catamounts Mendy McKenzie and Jordan Garrett are tied for the record. 
  • Eilers has also moved up in wins in the WCU record books. She has 18 career wins and is tied for seventh. 
  • The Catamounts open the season 4-1 for the first time since the 2016 season.
