Catamounts Set to Compete at Winthrop Kick-Off this Weekend

Will face Ball State, Youngstown State, Towson and host Winthrop

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball is set to compete in the Winthrop Kick-Off Tournament Friday through Sunday, Feb. 18-20 in Rock Hill, S.C.

Series Breakdown
 
Towson
 
  • Western Carolina and Towson meet for the second time on Friday. 
  • The Tigers won the lone contest 4-3 at a tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina in 2011. The Catamounts tied the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh, but Towson answered back with a walk-off RBI in the bottom of the frame.
 
Youngstown State 
 
  • Western Carolina and Youngstown State meet for the third time on Friday as the Penguins won both. 
  • Youngstown State won the first meeting 11-3 in 2012 and the 2020 contest 4-2.
 
Ball State 
 
  • Western Carolina and Ball State meet for the second time on Saturday. In the lone meeting in 2016, the Cardinals edged the Catamounts 5-4. 
  • Ball State scored all five of its runs in the first inning and held off a Catamount comeback attempt. 
  • WCU had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh but just couldn't push the crucial run across. 
 
 
Winthrop
 
  • Western Carolina and Winthrop will play each other for the second-straight weekend. The two teams met at the River City Lead-Off in Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 11 with the Catamounts coming away with a 3-0 victory.
  • Saturday's meeting in Rock Hill will be the 23rd between the two schools with the Eagles holding a slight 12-10 advantage. 
  • Western Carolina has won the last two meetings and six of the last seven.  
 
 
NOTES
 
  • Catamount pitchers Savannah Rice and Jayme Eilers each have an ERA under 1.20. Rice has a 1.07 ERA and Eilers is sitting at 1.17.
  •  Rice also leads the team at the plate with a .333 batting average, four home runs, five hits, six runs scored, and seven RBI. 
  • Eilers leads the team with 31 strikeouts on the year and Rice is close behind with 21.
  • Rice fanned a career-best 11 in the Catamounts' 5-1 win over Georgia State Wednesday. She also accounted for all five of WCU's runs with a two-run home run and a three-run home run. 
  • Western Carolina's 5-2 record to start the season is the best start for a Catamount team since 2016. 
  • The Catamounts have won four of its last six games. 
  • WCU is holding opponents to a .161 batting average. 
  • Eilers is the reigning Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week and also received an honorable mention recognition by the NFCA (National Fast Pitch Coaches Association).
  • Western Carolina is ranked seventh in the Extra Inning Softball Mid-Major poll.
