College of Charleston's Cougar Classic Next Up for Catamounts

Second-straight weekend in the state of South Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball is set to compete in the Cougar Classic, hosted by College of Charleston, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 25-27 in Charleston, S.C. The games will be played at Patriot's Point.

Series Breakdown
 
Appalachian State
 
  • Western Carolina and Appalachian State will meet for the 38th time on Friday. 
  • The Mountaineers have won the last three meetings. WCU and Appalachian State are 5-5 over the last 10 meetings.

  • Appalachian State enters the Cougar Classic 5-2 after going 3-1 at the PC Classic hosted by Presbyterian.

  • Combined the Appalachian State pitching staff has a 2.35 ERA and has given up two home runs.
 
Connecticut
  •  Western Carolina and Connecticut meet for the first time. The two teams will face off twice at the Cougar Classic on Feb. 25 and Feb. 26. 

Notes:
  • Connecticut enters the Cougar Classic 3-6.
  • The Huskies and Catamounts have a common opponent in the early season as Connecticut and WCU both faced Campbell. UCONN defeated the Camels 10-2.  
  • UCONN pitchers have combined 5.35 ERA and has allowed 25 extra base hits (14 doubles, three triples, and eight home runs).
  • As a team the Huskies are hitting .269 at the plate.
 
 College of Charleston 

  • Western Carolina and College of Charleston meet for the 31st and 32nd time at the Cougar Classic. 
  • The two teams last met in 2017 with the Cougars winning both meetings. 
  • College of Charleston has won seven of the last 10 meetings. 
     
Notes:
  • College of Charleston will host its second consecutive tournament as they held the Charleston Invitational last weekend.
  • The Cougars are 3-7 on the year going 1-4 in their home tournament.
  • College of Charleston is 1-4 at home.
  • The team has a .234 batting average and has hit four home runs.
  • The Cougar pitchers have a combed 2.12 ERA with 13 extra base hits: 12 doubles and yielding just one home run.
 
 
WESTERN CAROLINA NOTES
 
  • Western Carolina is 8-4 in the first 12 games of the season. 
  • Both Catamount starting pitchers Savannah Rice (1.47) and Jayme Eilers (1.49) have an ERA under 1.50.
  • As a staff, Catamount pitchers have a 1.75 ERA giving up 20 extra base hits (nine doubles, two triples and nine home runs).
  • Rice is 3-0 on the year with 32 strikeouts.
  • Eilers leads the Catamounts with 53 strikeouts – which leads the Southern Conference and ranks fifth in the NCAA. 
  • Rice not only helps pace the Catamounts in pitching she is also making a mark at the plate. She leads the Catamounts with a .286 batting average and tops the team with four home runs. 
  • Junior Brooklynn Brewington's nine stolen bases this season ranks seventh in the NCAA. Her nine stolen bases also rank tied for seventh in the WCU record books for stolen bases in a season. 
  • As a team, Western Carolina has a .201 batting average hitting 16 extra base hits (five doubles and 11 home runs).
  • Western Carolina has the most home runs amongst the three other teams in the Cougar Classic.
