Catamounts Open 2022 SoCon Championship Play Thursday

Faces No. 1 Seed Mercer

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - No. 8 seed Western Carolina women's basketball is set to face No. 1 seed Mercer at 11 a.m. Thursday in the upcoming 2022 Ingles SoCon Women's Basketball Championship at Harrah's Cherokee Center – Asheville in Asheville, N.C.
 
Thursday's game will be broadcast on the Catamount Sports Network with live streaming audio available online at CatamountSports.com beginning at 10:40 a.m. The game can also be seen with live streaming video through ESPN+ (paid subscription required).

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Joi Reid was named to the Southern Conference All-Defensive Team earning a spot voted on the team by the league coaches. She is the first Catamount to earn a spot on the team since its inception in the 2018-19 season. 
  • Western Carolina and Mercer meet for the 25th time on Thursday in the opening round of the Southern Conference Championships. The Bears swept the regular season defeating the Catamounts 69-58 in Cullowhee and 46-40 in Macon. Western Carolina will face Mercer in the first round of the SoCon Championships for the second-straight year and has gone up against the Bears four of the last five years. The Catamounts' last win over the Bears came in Cullowhee on Feb. 1, 2020, with WCU getting a 51-40 victory.
  • Western Carolina leads the SoCon in rebounding defense giving up 31.7 rebounds per game. 
  • Tembre Moates has 540 career rebounds and is tied for 21st in the WCU record books. The Super Senior became the 30th Catamount to gain entrance into the 500 Rebound Club. 
  • Western Carolina is playing in its 39th Southern Conference Tournament. The Catamounts played in its first SoCon tournament in 1984.
 
 
 AN INSIDE LOOK AT MERCER:
 
  • Five players from Mercer earned SoCon post-season honors led by Shannon Titus earning SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and Erin Houpt tabbed Freshman of the Year. Bears' Coach Susie Gardner was honored as Coach of the Year. 
  • Mercer earned its first 20-win season since 2018-19 with 20 wins in the regular season. 
  •  The 13-1 league mark is the third-best since joining the SoCon behind 14-0 seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
  • Mercer earned its fifth regular-season Southern Conference title in the 2021-22 season. The Bears have won three of the last four SoCon Tournament titles including the 2021 title.
