Catamounts set for Mid-Week Tilts at Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb

Last tune-up before opening SoCon play this weekend

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball will play a pair of mid-week doubleheaders traveling to Appalachian State on Tuesday and Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. The twin-bill with the Mountaineers is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. while the two-game contest with the Runnin' Bulldogs is set to begin at 3 p.m.

Series Breakdown
 
Appalachian State
 
  • Western Carolina and Appalachian State meet for the second and third time this season. The Mountaineers bested the Catamounts 3-0 at the Cougar Classic on Feb. 25th. 
  • This will be the 39th and 40th meeting all-time between the two programs. 
  • The Catamounts have lost the last four meetings. 
  • In the Mountaineers' final game as a Southern Conference member, in the 2014 Southern Conference Championships, Western Carolina ousted Appalachian State 3-2 on a Taylor Sigmon walk-off two-RBI single.
 
Notes:
  • Appalachian State enters the doubleheader on Tuesday on a two-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games to Georgia State. 
  • The doubleheader against Western Carolina is the Mountaineer's home opener. Appalachian State was supposed to host Boston College in its home opener Mar. 9 but the game was canceled. 
  • The Mountaineers have four players hitting above .300 led by Kayt Houston's .349.
  • Taylor Nichols paced the Mountaineer pitching staff with a 1.83 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Delani Buckner has a 2.71 ERA, a 6-2 record and leads the team with 50 strikeouts. 
  • Appalachian State has 20 home runs as a team and has given up 13.
 
Series Breakdown
 
Gardner-Webb
 
  • Western Carolina and Gardner-Webb meet for the 14th and 15th time on Wednesday. 
  • The Catamounts swept the doubleheader in Cullowhee in 2021, 2-1, 5-3.
  • Western Carolina is 8-5 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs. 
  • Garner-Webb is 3-1 against WCU at home. 
 
Notes:
  • Gardner-Webb is 2-3 over its last five games and lost two of three to North Carolina A&T last weekend. 
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs are 9-6 at home this season. 
  • Arceli Pesqueira paces Gardner-Webb with a .379 batting average.
  • As a team, the Runnin' Bulldogs have hit just five home runs this season. 
  • Sydney Gilbert tops the pitching staff with a 2.07 ERA striking out 39.
  • Runnin' Bulldog pitcher Andrea Lyon has fanned 63 batters and leads the team in strikeouts. 
 
 
WESTERN CAROLINA NOTES
 
  • In the doubleheader at North Carolina Central, Mar. 15, the Catamounts scored 18 runs in the pair of games. 
  • Senior shortstop Bailey Huneycutt is on a seven-game hitting streak. 
  • Huneycutt paces the team with 19 hits and also leads the team with 16 RBI.
  • Huneycutt has 26 career home runs and ranks third in the WCU record books. She needs four home runs to usurp former Catamount Lauren Ross' 29 and is chasing Hunter Gibbons' 35 career home runs. 
  • Fellow senior Myra Twitty tops the team with five home runs. 
  • Freshman Natalie Henry has reached base safely in 14-straight games. 
  • Henry also leads the team with a .308 batting average.
  • Junior Brooklynn Brewington has 12 stolen bases on the season which is tied for fifth in the WCU record books for stolen bases in a season. That mark is also ranked third in the Southern Conference. 
  • Catamount hurler Savannah Rice has five wins on the season, with a 2.56 ERA and 70 strikeouts. 
  • Rice's 164 career strikeouts are good for 10th in the WCU record books.
