Catamounts Travel to Furman This Weekend

Final nonconference doubleheader of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball travels to Furman April 23-24 in the Catamounts' final Southern Conference road swing of the season. The two team will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and the final game of the series at 1p.m. Sunday.

Series Breakdown
 
FURMAN
  • Western Carolina and Furman meet for the 54th, 55th and 56th time this weekend.
  • The Catamounts have won the last three meeting sweeping the Southern Conference series in 2021. Furman is 6-4 over Western Carolina in the last 10 meetings.
  • The Catamounts are 4-13 at Furman. Twenty of the meetings between the two teams have been decided by two runs or less.
 
Notes:
  • Furman is coming off a pair of losses at South Carolina April 20.
  • The Paladins took the final game of the three-game series against Samford 1-0 Saturday, April 16.
  • Furman has taken one game in the three conference series they have played.
  • The Paladins are 9-8 at home this season.
  • Emily Bartlett leads the Paladins with a .294 batting average with 32 hits, five home runs and 23 RBI.
  • As a team, Furman has hit 15 home runs.
  • Sierra Tufts leads the Paladins in the circle with a 3.74 ERA. She has tossed 125.1 innings with 62 strikeouts.
 
 
WESTERN CAROLINA NOTES
  • Western Carolina has won three of its last five games. In that span, WCU has scored 39 runs.
  • Bailey Huneycutt's 35 career home runs are tied for the most home runs in the Catamount record books. She is tied with former Catamount Hunter Gibbons. For the season Huneycutt has 13 home runs on the year good for second in the conference and 36th in the NCAA.
  • Myra Twitty earned her first-ever Southern Conference Player of the Week honor this week. She also got a nod from the NFCA as one the of top performances of the week.
  • Huneycutt has 88 total bases on the season leading the conference and is good for 59th in the NCAA. 
  • As a team, Western Carolina has 43 home runs on the season and needs two home runs to move up from fifth to third place in the WCU record books. That mark is good for second in the conference.
  • Brooklynn Brewington now has 24 stolen bases on the season. The Catamount single-season record-holder now moves into first in the conference for most stolen bases on the year. Her 24 stolen bases rank her 24th in the NCAA.
  • As a team, Western Carolina has stolen 55 bases this season and ranks second in the WCU record books. The 2022 club needs five stolen bases to break the program record of 59 set by the 2010 team.
