Series Breakdown

USC UPSTATE
  • Western Carolina and USC Upstate meet for the 28th and 29th time on Wednesday. The Spartans hold a 24-3 advantage however, the two teams split home and home in 2021.
  • The Catamount got its first-ever doubleheader sweep of the Spartans a year ago, almost to the day, on April 5, 2021, taking game one 4-3 and outlasting USC Upstate 6-5 in eight innings to complete the pair of wins.
  • All three of Western Carolina's wins over USC Upstate have been at home.

Notes:
  • The Spartans are 23-3 on the season and riding a 10-game winning streak.
  • Upstate is coming off its second three-game series sweep after beating Winthrop 4-0, 6-0, and 9-0 this past weekend in Spartanburg, S.C.
  • The Spartans have recorded shutout victories in the last five consecutive games against ETSU (4-0, 4-0) and Winthrop (4-0, 6-0, 9-0). This hasn't been achieved by the program since 2014.

 WESTERN CAROLINA NOTES
  • In the last 10 games, senior Bailey Huneycutt has a .444 batting average with 12 hits, six runs, a double, four of her eight home runs on the year, and 13 RBI.
  • Also, in the last 10 games, rookie pitcher Tessa Juett is finding her way. She may have a record of only 1-3 but the real number to look at is her strikeout to walk ratio. In 31.1 innings pitched the freshman has fanned 20 batters and only walked three.
  • Huneycutt has had nine multiple hits games and eight multiple-RBI games.
  • Junior outfielder Brooklynnn Brewington, the new single-season record holder for stolen bases in a season with 19, also ranks 25th in the NCAA for stolen bases in a season.
  • Junior pitcher Savannah Rice has eclipsed 100 strikeouts, a career-high for a season, with 101 on the year. She becomes the 14th Catamount pitcher to go over 100 strikeouts in a season.
  • In her career, Rice has 195 strikeouts and moves into eighth place in the WCU record books for strikeouts in a career.
  • Huneycutt has 30 home runs in her career and sits in second place. She needs six home runs to take over first place held by former Catamount Hunter Gibbons who had 24 in her four-year tenure.
  • Western Carolina has rescheduled its game with Presbyterian. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on April 19 at the Catamount Softball Complex.
