SoCon Announces 2021-22 Academic Honor Roll

Total of 191 Western Carolina student-athletes were honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -  A total of 191 Western Carolina student-athletes were honored as the Southern Conference released its academic honor roll for the 2021-22 academic year Wednesday. A combined 2,441 student-athletes from the SoCon's 10 member institutions and 14 associate members earned the distinction.

"Congratulations to these student-athletes for their exemplary academic achievement," SoCon Commissioner Jim Schaus said. "This is a big deal. We value academic excellence in the Southern Conference just like we do success with our sports programs. Also, thanks to the outstanding campus academic support teams for these students."

Western Carolina football led all Catamount teams on the honor roll list with 30 student-athletes while women's soccer was close behind with 28. Catamount women's tennis landed all nine members on the list.

The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89 when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0-grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year, and were members of the final squad lists. The award is different from the Academic All-Conference award that was announced Wednesday which is determined by cumulative GPA and involves a participation requirement.

Western Carolina had 69 student-athletes earn the Commissioner's Medal, awarded to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.8 or higher throughout the year, while 21 Catamounts closed out the 2021-22 academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Western Carolina student-athletes with a 4.0 for the 2021-22 academic year: Savannah Baldwin (softball), Peyton Davis (football), Bethany Dobias (softball), Lauren Esselborn (women's cross country/track and field), Katelyn Galbraith (women's soccer), Julia Gardon (volleyball), Kirsten Hahn (women's soccer), Alexis Hanson (women's soccer), Sara Klemm (women's cross country/track and field), Nicholas Kiser (men's cross country/track and field) Kristina Layton (women's soccer), Maggie Lloyd (women's soccer), Morgan Maddaluna (softball), Makenzie Martin (softball), Kate Mattison (women's cross country/track and field), Mikayla McIntyre (track and field), Audrey Meyers (women's track and field), Eden Punch (volleyball), Mikayla Roseman (women's soccer), Maddy Sherwood (women's track and field), Bailey Trumm (women's basketball) and Carter Unger (track and field).

Western Carolina had two student-athletes earn CoSIDA Academic All-District III First team honors: Natalie McNally (women's soccer) and Zach Ketterman (baseball).

The 2,441 selections league-wide are the third-most in SoCon history, trailing only the previous two academic years. Of this year's qualifiers, 712 earned the Commissioner's Medal and 264 posted perfect 4.0 GPAs, matching the record set last year.

Mercer paced the league with 294 members on the honor roll, while Samford was second with 269 and Wofford was third with 247. Each of the SoCon's 10 full members had at least 162 student-athletes on the list.
