Catamounts Host No. 18 Clemson Thursday in Home Opener

First 100 Students receive a shaved ice courtesy of Kona Ice

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer hosts No. 18 Clemson in its home opener at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. 
 
Everyone is encouraged to wear a Hawaiian shirt to the match against Clemson for "Hawaiian Shirt Night." The first 100 students will receive a free shaved ice courtesy of Kona Ice, who will be selling the delectable treat throughout the game.

AND INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina opened the season with a pair of ties. The Catamounts hit a 1-1 stalemate at Mount St. Mary's and was locked into a scoreless tie at Navy.
  • Melody Mezzina recorded her first shutout of the season against Navy and the 14th in her career. She currently ranks fourth in the WCU record books for shutouts.
  • Mezzina's 107 career saves are good for eighth in the WCU record books and her 1.06 goals against average ranks sixth. 
  • Freshmen Isabella DeMarco and Ava Robitaille got their first starts as Catamounts against Navy. 
  • Western Carolina is one of nine NCAA Division I women's soccer teams that have two pairs of sisters. Alexis and Isabella DeMarco and Rea and Milla Syska join sisters from Duke, Kansas State, Minnesota, Purdue, Saint Francis, South Dakota State, Tulsa, and UC Irvine.
  • Western Carolina and No. 14 Clemson meet for the third time Thursday and the first time in Cullowhee. The Tigers defeated the Catamounts 4-0 in 2000 and 2-0 in 2007. 
  • This is the second-straight year the Catamounts have played a top 15 team. WCU tangled with No. 5 Duke in 2021.
  • Head Coach Chad Miller is in search of his 100th career victory at the helm of the Catamount women's soccer program currently sitting at 98 wins. 
 
AND INSIDE LOOK AT THE CLEMSON:
  • Clemson enters Thursday's match with a 1-0-1 record-tying Texas A&M and defeating Campbell 5-1. 
  • The match at Western Carolina is the Tigers' first road match of the season.
  • Clemson defender Megan Bornkamp was named to the 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch List which recognizes the national player of the year. She was also named to the ACC All-Conference preseason.
  • Clemson was tabbed to finish fifth in the ACC coaches' preseason poll.
