Catamounts Travel to Mountain Rival UNCA Thursday

Beginning of four-match road swing

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer travels down I-40 Thursday to face off against mountain rival UNC Asheville at 6 p.m.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina is coming off a loss to a home loss to No. 18 Clemson and a 0-0 tie with UT Martin.
  • Including the trip to UNCA, the Catamounts will have played three of its first five matches on the road.
  • The contest with the Bulldogs Thursday is the first of a four-match road swing.
  • Western Carolina is still searching for its first offensive goal of the season. The credited to the Catamounts at Mount St. Mary's was an on goal leading to the 1-1 tie with the Mounts.
  • The Catamounts have shutout two of its last three opponents.
  • Western Carolina has held two teams scoreless who were predicted to win or place second in their perspective conferences. Navy (0-0 score) was picked to win the Patriot League while UT Martin (0-0 score) was chosen second in the Ohio Valley Conference.
  • Western Carolina and UNCA meet for the 18th time on Thursday. The Catamounts hold an 11-3-3 advantage over the Bulldogs and have won the last three meetings.
  • In the contest in 2021, WCU won 2-1 overcoming a 1-1 tie in the first half to take the lead and the victory with a goal at the 74th minute in the second.
  • Overall, the Catamounts are 8-1-1 against UNCA in the last 10 matches and 6-1 at the Bulldogs home field.
  • The Catamounts match against UNCA is the first of three-straight against Big South members as WCU will travel next weekend to Longwood and Radford.
AN INSIDE LOOK AT UNCA: 
  • UNCA enters the contest Thursday with a record of 2-1-1.
  • Three of the Bulldogs first four opponents have been against Southern Conference schools. UNCA opened the season with a 2-2 tie against Wofford, defeated VMI 4-1 and lost to The Citadel 2-1. UNCA's second win of the season came against South Carolina State defeating them 6-0.
  • Taylor Gardner paces the Bulldogs with four goals on the season. Two of her four goals came against South Carolina State.
