Catamounts Have Offensive Explosion in 3-1 Win at UNCA

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Three different players scored as Western Carolina women's soccer used an offensive explosion to defeat UNC Asheville 3-1 Thursday at Greenwood Soccer Field.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Senior Rea Syska scored the first goal of the game for the Catamounts – scoring the first offensive goal of the season for WCU.
  • Junior Maggie Lloyd posted the Catamounts' second goal of the contest – which turned out to be the eventual winner.
  • Sophomore Sophie Burchfield scored the first goal of her Catamount career finding the back of the net in the second half.
  • Rookie goalkeeper Leanne Trudel picked up her first win in goal allowing one Bulldog goal and registering one save.
  • Bulldog goalie Bronwyn Luitweiler had a valiant effort keeping the Catamounts out of the net with eight saves in the contest.
  • Western Carolina freshman Isabella DeMarco has four shots in the contest.
  • Sophomore Naya Marcil had two assists.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • After a scoreless first half, Western Carolina broke open the tie at the 51st minute. Marcil took a shot that was saved by Bulldog goalie Litweiler but the ball popped out of her grasp. Syska took the rebound and kicked the ball into the bottom right of the goal for the score.
  • UNCA tied the match just seven minutes later at the 58th minute.
  • Lloyd scored what would be the game-winning goal at 69:02. She kicked the ball toward the goal, following her shot, and sent it past the diving Bulldog goalie.
  • Burchfield iced the match with a goal at 76:57. At the left side of the goal, about five yards out, she sent the ball into the top right.
  • Western Carolina had 19 shots on goal with 11 on goal.
  • UNCA had a total of six shots, two in the first and four in the second. The Bulldogs had just two shots on goal with one being their goal.
 
 
News & Notes:
  • Western Carolina picked up its first victory of the season.
  • The Catamounts have now won four-straight against the Bulldogs.
  • Head Coach Chad Miller earned his 99th career victory at the helm of the Western Carolina women's soccer program.
  • Lloyd scored her first goal since March 29, 2021 (when the Catamounts played a spring season) against Wofford.
  • The match with UNCA is the first of three consecutive teams the Catamounts play from the Big South. WCU will face Longwood Sept. 8 and Radford Sept. 10.
  • The three goals by WCU is a season-high.
  • Western Carolina's three goals is the most goals UNCA has given up this season.
