Catamounts Open SoCon Play With a Pair of Home Matches

Welcomes Wofford and Furman

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer opens Southern Conference play this weekend at home hosting Wofford at 7 p.m. Friday and Furman at 2 p.m. Sunday.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina is coming off a six-day break after completing nonconference play at Ohio Sept. 16. The Catamounts fell on the road 3-0 to the Bobcats.
  • The Catamounts have been shutout in two-straight contests and is suffering through their first losing stretch of the season.
  • Western Carolina has not scored a goal since the Catamounts scored three in the 3-1 win over UNCA on Sept. 1. All told, WCU has not scored a goal in the last 316 minutes.
  • As a team, the Catamounts have scored a total of four goals in eight matches with three of the four being offensive. The goal at Mount St. Mary's was an own goal.
  • Western Carolina has given up 13 goals on the season.
  • WCU's four ties on the year is the most since the 2005 team had five.
  • Three different goalkeepers have seen action this season: Melody Mezzina, Leanne Trudel and Eden Reece. Trudel has played in seven matches and started five.
  • Western Carolina and Wofford meet for the 27th time on Friday with the Catamounts leading the all-time series 16-7-3. The Catamounts have won the last seven meetings and is 10-3 at home against the Terriers. In the 2021 campaign, Western Carolina defeated Wofford 2-1 in OT in Spartanburg, S.C. The Terriers last victory over the Catamounts was a 1-0 decision in 2013 in Cullowhee.
  • The Catamounts and Furman tangle for the 31st time on Sunday with the Paladins' leading the all-time series 8-21-1. The Paladins have won four of the last five meetings including a 1-0 decision in the semi-finals of the 2021 Southern Conference Championships. WCU won the 2021 regular season meeting 3-1 at the Paladins' home field. The Catamounts are 3-10-1 against Furman in Cullowhee.
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS:
  • Wofford enters Friday's contest on a two-match winning streak having closed out its nonconference portion of the season defeating Winthrop (2-0) and Charleston Southern (2-1). The Terriers have an overall record of 5-3-1 and 4-2 on the road.
  • The Terriers are led by Ashley Grant who has scored three goals and added two assists.
  • Caroline Doss has started all nine games in goal for Wofford notching 30 saves and 0.95 goals against average.
  • Wofford has scored a total of 11 goals and given up 11 and has three shutouts on the year.
  • Furman will travel to ETSU Friday before meeting Western Carolina in Cullowhee on Sunday.
  • The Paladins take a two-match winning streak into Johnson City, Tenn. to go up against the Buccaneers and enter SoCon play with a 5-4 nonconference record.
  • Paladin goalkeeper Nora Sampson is the reigning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week. She has started seven matches and started two on the year and has not yielded a goal in 304:39 minutes. She has 15 saves and a 0.00 goals against average.
  • As a team, Furman has scored 25 goals on the year and given up only 10 to opponents.
  • Stella Garcia leads Furman offensively with five goals and give assists.
