Catamounts Travel to Mercer Sunday

Delayed SoCon road opener

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer travels to Mercer Sunday for a 6 p.m. kick-off. The Catamounts had their match at the Citadel, Sept. 29, postponed due to inclement weather.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina is coming off a 1-1 effort in the opening weekend of Southern Conference play. The Catamounts shut out Wofford on Sept. 23, 3-0, and dropped a 2-0 decision to Furman on Sept. 25. 
  • In the win against Wofford head coach, Chad Miller won his 100th match at the helm of Catamount women's soccer. He is the winningest coach in the program's 24-year history.
  • Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Eden Reece got her first start as a Catamount in the 3-0 win against Wofford. She is currently 1-1 in goal as she also started in the loss to Furman. 
  • The Catamounts have shut out opponents four times on the season.
  • The four ties on the year are one shy of the record set in 2005. 
  • Maggie Lloyd and Sophie Burchfield lead the team in goals with two a-piece.  
  • Naya Marcil has a goal and two assists on the year. 
  • Western Carolina and Mercer meet for the 12th time on Sunday. The Bears have won the last three meetings and three of the last five. Western Carolina's last victory over Mercer came on Oct. 10, 2019, defeating the Bears 4-1. WCU is 3-4 in Macon against Mercer picking up a 1-0 double overtime win in 2018. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT MERCER:
  • Mercer is coming off a 0-0 tie with ETSU on Thursday, Sept. 30. The Bears had 26 shots in the match against the Buccaneers but couldn't find the back of the net.
  • The Bears have been held scoreless in two of the last three matches and also played to a tie in two of the last three.
  • Just like Western Carolina, Mercer has four ties on the season. 
  • Kendall Cook leads the Bears with six goals. She is followed by Nicole Icen who has four. Icen is the younger sister of former Catamount goalkeeper Natalia Icen (2017-2020).
  • The Bears have scored 30 goals as a team this season and given up 13. However, Mercer scored 21 of its 30 goals in the first six games of the season which included nine goals in the shutout win against South Carolina State. Over the last six games, the Bears have scored nine goals.
