CHARLESTON, S.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer tied a program record with its fifth straight victory on Thursday, downing The Citadel 3-0 on a rainy afternoon at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field.
WCU improves to 6-1 in the Southern Conference and 9-3-3 overall while The Citadel drops to 3-7-5 and 0-6-1 in conference play. The last time the Catamounts won five straight matches occurred during the 2001 season from Sept. 30 – Oct. 14.
"Today was a good team win for us," said head coach
Chad Miller. "It's big anytime you can get three points and a shutout at this point in the season. I thought our back four did a good job managing our box. A big key to our success was our midfield defense especially in transition. We'll take this result and prepare for Sunday's match against VMI."
A pair of Charleston residents teamed up for the first Catamount goal in the 17th minute.
Alexis DeMarco scored her second goal of the year assisted by her sister,
Isabella DeMarco. The Catamounts led 1-0 at halftime and held a 5-2 edge in shots.
In the 46th minute,
Becca Campbell headed in a cross from
Sofia Goclowski for her second goal of the season which gave the Catamounts a 2-0 lead.
Abbie Lainhart capped the scoring with a goal in the 81st minute. Lainhart gained control of a header by a Bulldog player and flicked the ball inside the left post for her third goal of the season.
Leanne Trudel recorded her eighth shutout as she was credied with two saves. Nora Sampson made four saves for The Citadel.
For the match, WCU outshot The Citadel 13-5 and enjoyed a 7-2 margin in shots on goal.
The Catamounts close out the home portion of the regular season on Sunday, welcoming VMI to the Catamount Athletics Complex for a Noon start. Sunday's match will also serve as Senior Day with seven players being honored prior to the match.
