Women’s Soccer Hosts Chattanooga in SoCon Showdown Thursday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Sitting in a tie for first place in the Southern Conference standings, the Western Carolina women's soccer team concludes a four-match homestand on Thursday by welcoming reigning regular-season champion Chattanooga to the Catamount Athletics Complex for a 6 p.m. contest.

Thursday's match is Kick Cancer night and fans are encouraged to wear pink. The showdown between the Mocs and Catamounts will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with free live stats available on CatamountSports.com.

WCU (6-3-3, 3-1 SoCon) earned its second straight shutout in a 5-0 victory over Wofford on Sunday afternoon. Naya Marcil scored a goal and two assists with Maggie Lloyd, Becca Campbell, Sofia Goclowski, and Maddie Lopez also netting a goal. Leanne Trudel made one save as the Catamount defense recorded its second straight shutout and sixth of the year.

On Tuesday, Marcil was tabbed as The Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week and was also selected as a Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week member. Campbell was named The Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her part in the two conference shutout victories. Both players earned weekly awards for the first time in their careers.

Chattanooga (8-3-1, 2-1-1), battled Furman to a 1-1 draw in the Scenic City on Sunday. The Paladins got on the board in the first six minutes of the match before the Mocs tied the contest just after halftime and ended the match with a 23-11 edge in shots. UTC was picked just ahead of WCU in the SoCon preseason poll, holding fourth and fifth, respectively.

The teams have played 22 previous times with WCU holding a 12-9-1 advantage in the all-time series. Chattanooga earned a 1-0 win at Finley Stadium in 2022. Since winning four-straight from 2012-15, the Mocs have won six of the last seven head-to-head meetings.

The Catamounts hit the road for their next two matches, beginning with a trip to Mercer on Sunday at 2 p.m.
