Western Carolina embarks on a season-long four-game road swing in Birmingham against UAB. Chelsea Wooten led WCU on Thursday against Radford with 21 points, connecting on 8-of-16 shooting in a 67-49 defeat to the Highlanders. She added a team-high five steals. Wooten's 21 points marked the second straight game a Catamount had eclipsed 20 points in the young season as Reagan Trumm had 20 in the opener against Agnes Scott.
Jada Burton currently leads WCU with 13 assists through the opening two games, which ranks second in the SoCon. Wooten sits second in the league with seven steals after tallying five in Thursday's home contest with Radford.
UAB recorded a 14-17 record, including a 5-15 mark in Conference USA a season ago, as the Blazers moved to the AAC before the start of the 2023-24 season. UAB advanced to the 2023 CUSA women's tournament quarterfinals before falling to WKU.
UAB comes into the matchup with a 1-0 record after a 70-63 victory over Alabama A&M in last Monday's Blazers season-opening contest. The Blazers are led by Mia Moore, who had 27 points and six rebounds in the victory over Alabama A&M. Tracey Bershers led the Blazers last Monday with nine rebounds in the win. UAB was tabbed 13th in the AAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll under the direction of 11th-year head coach Randy Norton.
WCU and UAB meet for the third time in program history on Monday with the Blazers winning both of the prior two meetings from the Catamounts, including a 71-58 result a season ago in Cullowhee. In last year's contest, Reagan Trumm tallied 12 points off the bench over 20 minutes for Western Carolina.
Following Monday's matchup in Birmingham, the Catamounts continue on the road with a trip to Wilmington to battle UNCW on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. against the Seahawks. UNCW is 1-1 on the season as the Seahawks grabbed a 78-42 win over the Apprentice School in their opener before dropping a 74-49 result to SoCon foe Wofford on Saturday.
