Georgia State Uses Deep Ball to Push Past Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball opened its four-game homestand on Tuesday, falling to Georgia State 90-57 on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. Jada Burton led the way for WCU with 13 points and added five assists.

"We did a great job early with the disruptions, but we struggled to put the ball in the basket anywhere on the floor," said head coach Kiley Hill. "It put more stress on our defensive side of the court. We got very lethargic in the second quarter, but we couldn't make a shot to get back in the game and regain the rhythm."

Burton scored her team-high 13 points, making 6-of-9 field goals while dishing out a team-high five assists. Zanoria Cruz was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and made three at the foul line for 11 points while adding four rebounds. Chelsea Wooten tallied nine points while recording a pair of steals.

Kaleigh Addie led the Panthers with 15 points, connecting on a pair of threes as Deasia Merrill, Mya Williams, and Erin Turral finished with a dozen points for Georgia State. Kamyn Dziak added 11 points, connecting on three triples, while Crystal Henderson made three 3-pointers for 10 points. Turral added a team-high five rebounds.

Georgia State (4-2) started quickly with a 9-4 run out of the gates in the opening two minutes to gain the early lead. Western Carolina (2-5) answered with the game's next six points to earn a one-point edge before the Panthers went on a 13-3 run to gain a nine-point lead at 22-13 with 1:46 to play in the first quarter. Reagan Trumm connected on a pair of late 3-pointers to help the Catamounts cut the deficit to 26-19 after one.

The Panthers kept the offensive pressure on the hosts with an 11-4 burst out of the gates in the second half to make it 37-23 for GSU with 3:36 in the first half. The guests kept up the scoring with a 5-2 burst in the final two minutes to take a 42-25 lead to the break. Georgia State held the Catamounts to just six points in the second to gain the 17-point edge.

Georgia State began the second half on a 9-3 run to extend its lead to 51-28 with 7:07 to play in the third. The two teams went back and forth through the middle portion of the quarter before an 8-3 spurt late allowed the Panthers to take a 67-38 lead to the final 10 minutes on Tuesday night.

Following a Burton layup in the opening stages of the quarter, Georgia State went on a 9-3 run to create enough separation for the guests to claim a 90-57 victory.

Georgia State finished the night with 54.1% (33-of-61) and held WCU to 41.8% (23-of-55). The Panthers did their damage from beyond the arc, connecting on 12 triples compared to four for the home team. GSU was 12-of-17 at the charity stripe, while the Catamounts were 7-for-13 at the line. The Panthers controlled the glass by eight, 37-29. Both teams shared the ball evenly, with WCU tallying 13 helpers as GSU finished with a dozen. The Panthers had a 34-28 edge in points in the paint and a 48-21 advantage on bench points.

The Catamounts are set to welcome in Presbyterian on Saturday, Dec. 2, for a 4 p.m. start from Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.
