Postgame Notes - at Wofford

Postgame Notes
#20/16 Western Carolina 28, Wofford 25
Gibbs Stadium
Spartanburg, S.C. | Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023
Att: 4,996

With the Win:
  • Western Carolina snapped a two-game seasonal skid with consecutive losses to NCAA FCS playoff contenders Furman and Mercer – WCU's first consecutive losses since dropping three-straight from Oct. 8 through Oct. 22 in the 2022 season;
  • Extended WCU's current winning streak over Wofford to three-straight games, the team's longest since winning eight-consecutive from 1977 through 1996 … It was also a second-straight road win for WCU over Wofford in Spartanburg, the best since a two-game win streak from 1978 through 1981;
  • Stretched WCU's current seasonal road winning streak to four-straight away from Cullowhee – and marked a fifth-consecutive FCS road win dating back to last season (at ETSU, at EKU, at The Citadel, at Chattanooga, at Wofford);
  • Gave the Catamounts a sixth seasonal victory, raising the record to 6-3 on the season matching the team's win total from the 2022 season, the second under head coach Kerwin Bell;
  • WCU head coach Kerwin Bell moved back above the .500 mark in Cullowhee at 16-15 as the Catamount head coach … He also claimed his 109th career win, moving to 109-57 (.657);

Post-Game Notes:
  • Western Carolina's offense has 4,418 yards of total offense through the first nine games … the Catamounts are just 921 yards shy of the single-season record of 5,339 yards set in the 2022 season … WCU only needs to average 461 yards per game over the final two regular-season games to eclipse the school benchmark;
  • WCU fifth-year senior offensive lineman Tyler Smith continued his impressive streak of consecutive starts, extending his stretch to 52-straight starts among his 56 career games played … Freshman OL #53 Zach Watson made his first collegiate start at right tackle for the Catamounts in the road game at Wofford;
  • Catamounts redshirt freshman RB Camury Reid rushed a career-high 11 times for a career-best 65 yards in Saturday's road win at Wofford … Reid was a part of WCU rushing for 171 yards, snapping a two-game drought of being held below the century mark (84 yards vs. Furman and 86 yards vs. Mercer;
  • RB Branson Adams recorded his second rushing touchdown of the season while also halting a two-game drought for the Catamounts in finding the end zone on the ground;
  • Sophomore QB Cole Gonzales tossed two more touchdown passes in the road win at Wofford giving him 23 this season to set a WCU single-season record … Gonzales by-passed former QB Tyrie Adams who held the previous benchmark as he threw 22 TD passes in 2017 to eclipse the previous record of 21 set by Jeff Gilbert in 1983 … Gonzales is just FIVE touchdown passes shy of 10th-place in SoCon single-season history (Todd Doman, Marshall – 28 in 1994; Scott Riddle, Elon – 28 in 2010) and is 13 shy of the SoCon's single-season record of 36 accomplished twice by Samford's Devlin Hodges (2016) and Michael Hiers (2022);
  • Gonzales has thrown a touchdown pass in EIGHT-consecutive games and in eight of the nine games this season with seven multiple-TD passing games … He's also thrown a scoring pass in 12-straight NCAA FCS games dating back to last season including 11 multi-TD games during that stretch;
  • Gonzales climbed into FIFTH in WCU's career record books with his two TD passes on Saturday, giving him 34 over his first two seasons … He surpassed former QB Jeff Gilbert who threw 33 TD passes from 1981-84 … Gonzales is just FIVE TD passes shy of fourth-place Don Dalton (39, 1966-69);
  • Gonzales has thrown for 2,418 yards this season through nine games … Gonzales already ranks EIGHTH in WCU's single-season record book … With 3,754 career passing yards through the Wofford game, Gonzales remains 12th on WCU's career passing chart just behind Todd Cottrell (11th with 3,933 yards – 1987-89);
  • Gonzales scored his first official points of the season with a two-point conversion rush … It was WCU's first two-point attempt this season;
  • WR Censere Lee caught his team-best seventh touchdown pass on Saturday … He continues to rank just off WCU's single-season Top 10 list … His next receiving score will match him for NINTH on WCU's single-season charts, tying TE Owen Cosenke (8, 2018), WR Michael Banks (8, 2000) and WR Kerry Hayes (8, 1992) … Lee is five receiving scores shy of the school single-season record;
  • After going seven games over two years due to injury between touchdown receptions, redshirt junior WR Calvin Jones has posted TD receptions in back-to-back games the past two weeks … Senior WR David White Jr., nearly extended his streak to five-straight games with a receiving score but had a would-be touchdown skip through his fingertips at the goal line, ultimately halting his impressive run at four-consecutive games with a receiving TD;
  • Junior DB Andreas Keaton led the Catamounts with a second-straight double-digit tackle effort, posting a game-best 10 tackles … Over the past three weeks, WCU's defense now has FOUR double-digit tackle efforts – Va Lealaimatafao (17 vs. Furman), Andreas Keaton (12 vs. Mercer; 10 at Wofford), and Antoine Williams (10 vs. Mercer);
  • Backup linebacker redshirt freshman Blue Monroe recorded a career-high three tackles against Wofford, posting his first sack, credited with half a tackle for loss on the play … Sophomore DB Samaurie Dukes returned from injury in the win at Wofford, recording three tackles including one for loss in the win;
  • Redshirt senior PK Richard McCollum scored eight points in Saturday's win, connecting on two PATs and a pair of field goals from 21 and 33-yards in the fourth quarter to represent the game winner … Currently with 278 career points scored, McCollum moved into a tie for THIRD in program history for career scoring, matching former RB Detrez Newsome (278 points, 2014-17) … McCollum is now just TWO points shy of second-place Dean Biasucci (280, 1980-83) and just 24 points shy of the program's all-time leader Kirk Roach (302 points, 1984-87);
  • McCollum's two field goals gives him 44 made field goals for his WCU career (44-of-51, 86.3%) as he maintains possession of THIRD all-time in program history … McCollum trails second-place Dean Biasucci (57-of-70, 1980-83) and all-time leader Kirk Roach (71-of-101, 1984-87).

  • WCU wore its white jerseys over its purple pants on Saturday marking the third-time this season since the Catamounts added purple pants back to the mix this year … WCU improved to 2-1 in the white/purple look;
